Botanic garden in Göteborg

Spring is popping a little bit everywhere. In Sweden is still shy and not visible everyday, but there has been some nice sunny days. On one of them we went for a walk in the botanic gardens. There's still not too many flowers but the gardens are beautiful during all seasons anyway. Here are some pictures we took then.

A Primavera está a chegar aos poucos. Na Suécia ainda é uma Primavera tímida que não se mostra todos os dias, mas temos tido alguns dias de sol muito bonitos. Num deles fomos passear ao jardim botânico. inda não havia muitas flores, mas é sítio agradável e bonito durante todas as estações do ano. Aqui ficam algumas fotos que tiramos.

Learning Swedish

Learning a new language is always a challenge. Learning basics in several languages makes it more difficult but a lot funnier as well. I learned Czech in the past 2 years and now I'm learning Swedish. I don't need to speak Czech anymore, but it still occupies a part of my brain, the same part where I'm trying to engrave Swedish, so right now I mix words from both languages a lot of times. It's funny and there has been a few situations that me and Johan ended up laughing to tears.

Of course I will let you know... I never miss a good chance to make my readers laugh with me!

Me trying to point out things during one of our walks in the forest:

Sara- Vänster det är strom! (going for: On the left there are trees)

Johan (very confused looking left)- Ah? Sure... where?

Sara- What do you mean where? Everywhere!

Johan, finally understanding and laughing- Sara, strom is tree in Czech, not in Swedish! Strom sounded like "electricity" in Swedish, so I was really confused!

Sara- Now I know why no one understood anything when I said that Stromstad (a city north of Fjällbacka) is the city of trees...

Aprender uma língua nova é sempre um desafio. Aprender o básico em várias línguas torna o processo mais difícil mas também muito mais engraçado. Passei os últimos 2 anos a aprender checo e agora ando a aprender sueco. Já não preciso de falar checo no dia a dia, mas ainda ocupa um espaço no meu cérebro, espaço esse onde estou a tentar gravar o sueco, o que significa que agora misturo palavras das duas línguas. É engraçado e são muitas as vezes que eu e o Johan acabamos a rir até às lágrimas. 

Claro que vos vou contar... eu lá perco uma boa oportunidade para fazer rir os meus leitores!

Eu, a tentar dizer coisas que nos rodeavam enquanto passeávamos à beira de uma floresta:

Sara- Vänster det är strom! (a tentar dizer: à esquerda estão árvores)

Johan (muito confuso a olhar para esquerda)- Ah? Claro... onde?

Sara- Como assim onde? Em todo o lado!

Johan, entende o que eu quero dizer e ri às gargalhadas- Sara, strom é árvore em checo, não em sueco! Strom soou parecido a electricidade e eu fiquei confuso!

Sara- Agora percebo porque é que ninguém entendeu quando eu disse que Stromstad (uma cidade a norte de Fjällbacka) era a cidade das árvores...

Fjällbacka - Sweden

We spent the weekend in Fjällbacka, a small fishermen village on the West coast of Sweden. Or as they say here the Best coast. The West coast is populated with beautiful small villages and towns who get crowded in the summer but are peaceful and calm off season. Fjällbacka is one of them. We enjoyed taking walks near the sea, observing the gorgeous red wooden Swedish houses and looking at the landscape in general. 

Passamos o fim de semana em Fjällbacka, uma pequena vila piscatória na costa Oeste da Suécia. Ou como se diz por aqui a Melhor costa sueca. A costa Oeste é recheada de aldeias e vilas de pescadores, que ficam lotadas no verão, mas são tranquilas e calmas durante a época baixa. Fjällbacka é uma delas. Adoramos os passeios à beira mar, a observar as tradicionais casas suecas de madeira vermelha e a apreciar a paisagem em geral.

In the middle of the village there's a small mountain (fjäll actually means mountain in Swedish). There are a couple of trails that go through the mountain and the view from the top is fantastic. On the way up one goes through a rock stuck between two narrow stone walls, a place known as Kungsklyftan. 

No meio da vila há uma montanha (fjäll significa montanha em sueco). Há duas trilhas que atravessam a montanha e a vista do topo é fantástica. Na subida cruzamo-nos com uma pedra enorme presa entre duas paredes estreitas também de pedra. O local é conhecido como Kungsklyftan.

The top of the mountain is flat and it forms small lakes, which adds more water to the landscape. 

O topo da montanha é plano e formaram-se pequenos lagos o que adiciona ainda mais água à paisagem. 

To improve our weekend even more, we had rented a room in a guesthouse to stay one night, but because we are still far from the summer and this weekend was a bit too gray, there was no other bookings and we had the whole villa just for us. The view from our room and the common balcony was gorgeous.

Para melhorar ainda mais o fim de semana, tínhamos alugado um quarto numa guesthouse, mas como o Verão ainda vem longe e este fim de semana foi um bocadinho cinzento não havia outras reservas e tivemos o casarão todo só para nós. A vista do nosso quarto e da varanda comum era linda.

Our weekend was relaxed, peaceful and lovely. The perfect weekend getaway! 

O nosso fim de semana foi relaxante, tranquilo e muito bom. Não podia ter sido melhor!

Easter in Sweden

Easter is a holiday that I have somehow celebrated less and less in the past years. Some years I was alone in some distant country and some other years we took the chance to travel. Now that I think about it, even in the years I went home to Portugal for Easter we didn't have anything too traditional. We made a special lunch on Sunday and I got a chocolate cake from my godparents (that I still get the following time I go home after Easter). 

This was the first time I spent Easter in Sweden. Here both the Friday before and the Monday after are holidays, so it was a nice relaxed 4 day weekend. We spent most days reading, making puzzles, eating and drinking. There was also some running and walking, and of course... for candy.

A Páscoa é um evento que tenho festejado cada vez menos nos últimos anos. Houve anos que estava longe e sozinha, houve anos que aproveitamos para ir viajar. Agora que penso nisso, mesmo nos anos em que passei a Páscoa em Portugal nunca fizemos grandes festejos. Talvez um almoço um pouco mais especial no Domingo e recebi sempre um bolo de chocolate dos meus padrinhos (que fica para mais tarde quando não vou a casa na Páscoa).

Este foi o primeiro ano que passei a Páscoa na Suécia. Aqui é feriado na sexta feira santa e na segunda feira seguinte também, o que faz um bom fim de semana de 4 dias. Passámos os dias a ler, a fazer puzzles, a comer e a beber. Também houve tempo para correr ou caminhar e claro... para comer gomas.

It was the first time we tried this kind of puzzles and I have to say they are a lot of fun, because they are full of funny small details.
Foi a primeira vez que experimentamos este tipo de puzzles e ficamos convencidos, porque estão cheios de detalhes engraçados.

A tradição das gomas é:

1- Go to the shop and fill up a bag with your favourite and pay according to how much it weighs.
      Ir à loja das gomas, encher um saquinho com as preferidas e pagar consoante o peso.

2- Transfer the candy into a colourful Easter egg, lined with half of a napkin.
      Transferir as gomas para um ovo de Páscoa colorido, forrado com meio guardanapo de papel.

Chocolate candy is also available in the shop.

3- Keep your egg around at all times and happily eat candy the whole day.
      Mantenha o seu ovo por perto e vá comendo as gomas alegremente durante o dia todo. 

Similarly to Christmas, swedes celebrate Easter on the eve, therefore on Saturday. Traditions can change a bit from family to family, and what I'm about to show is how I had it. During the afternoon we ate candy. Very thoughtfully, Johan's parents got me an egg full of nuts because they knew I am not a big fan of candy (I think the nuts might become a new tradition).

À semelhança do Natal, os suecos festejam a Páscoa na noite anterior, ou seja no Sábado. As tradições podem mudar um pouco de familia para familia e aqui vou falar de como foi a minha Páscoa. Durante a tarde comemos gomas. Os pais do Johan foram super fofos e deram-me um ovo de Páscoa com frutos secos, por saberem que eu não sou grande fã de gomas (é possível que os frutos secos passem a ser uma nova tradição). 

Dinner was a great combination of mostly fish dishes. Well, it was mostly herring, a pickled fish, prepared in different sauces (in the pictures above they are the ones in the fish-shaped plates). There was also some smoked salmon, a salmon and spinach pie, eggs and ham. I added a tuna pate, which seemed to fit in the theme and a tapenade. Obviously, there was some alcohol with all this, such as beer, wine and the famous schnaps (a strong alcohol drunk in shot glasses). We were all quite full and we had to wait a couple of hours to eat dessert.

I had a lot of fun during the Easter break and I hope you had too!

O jantar foi uma combinação de pequenos pratos de peixe. A maioria era de arenque em pickles servido em diferentes molhos (nas fotos são os que estão em pratos com forma de peixe). Também comemos salmão fumado e tarte de salmão e espinafres, ovos e fiambre. Eu fiz paté de atum, que me pareceu combinar com o tema, e tapenade. Claro que houve álcool à mistura: vinho, cerveja e schnaps (um destilado bebido em copos de shot). Ficamos todos muito cheios e acabámos por comer a sobremesa só mais tarde.

Eu diverti-me imenso durante esta mini férias da Páscoa e espero que vocês também!
