The Cinque Terre are a group of five fishing towns on the coast of Liguria, north of Italy: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. They are Unesco's World Heritage and all belong to the Cinque Terre national park. The park contains many different trails for hiking of various distances and difficulties. The most famous trail is the Sentiero Azzuro, or the Blue trail, which connects all 5 towns in about 5h. Due to landslides and maintenance problems two of the connections between 3 of the towns have been closed, including the famous Lover's walk between Manarola and Riomaggiore. There are alternative trails and it's still possible to walk the whole way, although those trails are harder and take longer. For those who are not so much into hiking there are trains twice an hour connecting the 5 towns and one can visit them all within one day. There's also a full day ticket, which allows the traveler to use the trains an unlimited number of times.
Of course we chose hiking. The train from Genova takes about 1h and we arrived in the first town, Monterosso, by 9am. The hike from Monterosso to Vernazza is the longest and toughest of the Sentiero Azzuro, but easier than the alternative trails we had to take. Vernazza was our favourite of them all. The first sight of it, from high up on the nearest mountain is a great first impression! The next town is Corniglia and it seats on top of a cliff, instead of near the sea. Afterwards, you come to Manarola, and if you did it using the alternative trail you come with your legs shaking, because just before you had a steep and very long downhill trail, full of uneven steps. The last town is Riomaggiore. Manarola and Riomaggiore are connected by the lovers walk, which is a nice gorgeous and flat path that usually takes about 20 minutes, depending on how many pictures you take on the way. The alternative trail takes you straight up to the mountain and then straight down on the other side. By that I mean 20 minutes climbing very steep stone steps up and then similar but down.
It was challenging and awesome at the some time. There was a lot of up and down, and when you are going up you wish you were going down, but then you go down and you wish you were going up! I enjoy this kind of challenge and although I paid the price the next few days with muscle pain in my legs, I loved the experience! It was our favourite day during this whole trip and we had a great time. The views we got from the top of the mountain are breathtaking and something you don’t get if you do it by train.

As Cinque Terre são um grupo de cinco aldeias piscatórias espalhadas ao longo da costa da Liguria, no norte de Itália: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. São Património Mundial da Unesco e pertencem ao Parque Nacional Cinque Terre. O parque contém inúmeros trilhos para caminhadas de dificuldades e durações diferentes. O trilho mais famosos é o Sentiero Azzuro, ou o caminho azul, que liga as 5 aldeias em cerca de 5h. Por causa do deslizamento de terras e de trabalhos de manutenção, dois dos trilhos do caminho azul que ligam 3 aldeias têm estado fechados. Isto inclui o famoso Caminho do Amor, entre Manarola e Riomaggiore. Há trilhos alternativos e ainda é possível caminhar para todas as aldeias, mas os trilhos são mais difíceis e demoram mais tempo. Para os que não gostam tanto de caminhar existem comboios que ligam as 5 localidades e é possível visitar todas num dia só. Há também um bilhete diário que permite usar os comboios sem limites.
Claro que nós escolhemos caminhar. O comboio de Génova demora cerca de 1h e nós chegámos à primeira aldeia, Monterosso, às 9 da manhã. O trilho de Monterosso a Vernazza é o mais longo do Caminho Azul, mas ainda assim mais fácil que os trilhos alternativos que fizemos no final. Vernazza foi a nossa favorita de todas. A primeira impressão que tivemos, do topo da montanha foi fantástica! A próxima foi Corniglia, que em vez de ficar mesmo à beira mar fica no topo de uma falésia. Depois vem Manarola, e pela trilha alternativa chega-se com as pernas a tremer, porque se desce muito e o trilho é bastante inclinado, cheio de degraus irregulares. A última aldeia é Riomaggiore. Manarola e Riomaggiore estão ligadas pelo Caminho do Amor, que além de lindo e romântico é a direito e demora apenas cerca de 20 minutos, fotos incluídas. O trilho alternativo é metade a subir a pique e a outra metade a descer a pique. Foram 20 minutos sempre a subir por degraus de pedra irregulares e depois igual mas a descer.
Foi desafiante e fantástico ao mesmo tempo. Houve muito caminho a subir e muito a descer. Quando subimos desejamos estar a descer e quando estamos a descer descobrimos que afinal preferíamos subir! Eu adoro este tipo de desafios e ainda que tenha pago o preço nos dias seguintes, com dores musculares nas pernas, adorei o nosso dia tão cheio. Foi o nosso dia preferido na viagem inteira e as vistas que presenciamos no topo das montanhas são de tirar a respiração, o que não se vivencia se fizermos o percurso de comboio.

A nice area in the mountain top, with tiny houses for... cats! The cats actually live there and someone must come and feed them. The cats seemed to be used to people because they posed for pictures, but they did not allowed to be patted.
Uma área acolhedora no topo da montanha com casinhas minúsculas para... gatos! Os gatos moram ali e deve ir lá alguém pôr comida. Os gatos pareciam estar habituados às pessoas porque pousaram para as nossas fotos, mas não deixaram fazer festas.

Vernazza was very crowded and I can imagine that in the summer it becomes impossible to walk around. The town itself is very cute and cosy. I hope some day we can go back and spend some more time in this gorgeous place.
Vernazza estava cheia de gente e imagino que no Verão fique lotada mesmo. A aldeia em si é giríssima e acolhedora. Espero que um dia possamos voltar e passar mais tempo nesta localidade tão especial.
