Pisa - Italy

Pisa is a city in Tuscany, Italy, well known for its leaning tower. Genoa and Pisa are connected by railway and the trip between the two cities takes just over 2h. I went to Pisa on my own and I made it a day trip, returning to Genoa in time for dinner with some old friends also attending the conference like Johan. The day started very grey, there was rain for about 30 minutes but then it cleared out and I got a beautiful sunny afternoon.

Pisa is a very touristic city with most of its tourists gathered around the Duomo/leaning tower complex and the streets nearby. I visited the most popular sights firsts, but afterwards I delighted myself with a nice long walk throughout the city, following the route advised by a map I got at the tourist information center. I think I got a nice taste of the real Pisa, as a I didn't meet many tourists, but mostly locals, especially students. Still, it is quite clear that tourism plays a major role in the daily life and economy of Pisa.

Pisa é uma cidade na Toscana, em Itália, conhecida mundialmente pela sua torre inclinada. Génova e Pisa estão ligadas por caminhos de ferro e a viagem entre as duas demora pouco mais de 2h. Fui e voltei a Pisa no mesmo dia, sozinha, e ainda voltei a Génova a tempo de jantar com um grupo de amigos que estavam na mesma conferência que o Johan. O dia começou bastante cinzento, ainda choveu 30 minutos, mas depois o céu limpou e ficou um lindo dia solarengo. 

Pisa é uma cidade muito turística com a maioria dos turistas concentrados no complexo da catedral e da torre e nas ruas ali perto. Comecei por visitar os monumentos principais e depois deliciei-me com um passeio longo pelo resto da cidade, seguindo a rota sugerida pelo mapa que fui buscar ao centro de turismo. Acho que desta forma conheci o lado real de Pisa, porque quase não me cruzei com turistas, mas sim com estudantes e locais. É bastante claro que o turismo ºe muito importante para a cidade de Pisa, tanto na vida diária como na sua economia.

The leaning tower of Pisa is actually the bell tower of the Duomo. For reasons not quite well understood it started leaning soon after its construction and it soon became its special thing. Nowadays, the tower undergoes maintenance works regularly to keep it leaning but still safe. To stand near something so grand and heavy leaning so much was quite impressive. The architecture of both the tower and the Duomo is also quite a piece of art. One is allowed to go up the tower, but I didn't this time as it was raining then, and later I thought it would be better to share the experience with someone. 

A famosa Torre de Pisa é de facto a torre dos sinos do Duomo. Por razões que não são completamente claras começou a inclinar-se logo depois de ser construída, tornando a torre especial. Nos dias de hoje a torre sofre trabalhos de manutenção regularmente para que se mantenha inclinada mas ainda assim segura. Observar de perto um monumento tão grande e pesado e ainda assim tão inclinado foi algo que me impressionou. A arquitectura da torre e também do próprio Duomo é qualquer coisa por si só. A subida à torre é permitida mas não o fiz desta vez. Estava a chover na altura e quando mais tarde parou decidi que era uma experiência que preferia partilhar com outra pessoa, numa outra altura.

The building on the left is the Camposanto Monumentale, which literally means "holy field" as it was believed it was built on sacred soil and it was burial ground.
O edifício à esquerda na foto é o Camposanto Monumentale, que significa "campo sagrado" porque segundo a lenda foi construído em terreno sagrado e era um cemitério.

One of the things I really enjoy about Italy is the details. The little balconies, the flowery windows, the colourful tunnels and the vespas decorating every corner, piazza and street.

Uma das coisas que gosto realmente na Itália são os detalhes. As varandas pequenas, as janelas floridas, os túneis coloridos e as vespas a preencher cada canto em cada praça e em cada rua.

Sara Jump - Cinque Terre

A Sara jump in each of the Cinque Terre... or so was my wish. We had to run to catch the train back in the last of the 5 villages and I forgot to do the Riomaggiore Sara Jump. To make up for it I made two in Vernazza, one of them with Johan, who is always behind the camera, taken by a nice fellow hiker who loved the idea of the Sara Jump.

School will always be school. Certain patterns repeat no matter what kind of class you are having, in which country, or at what age.

1. The bad boy with the tattoos seats in the back of the classroom.
2. The cool guy with the hat seats at the back of the classroom as well, with his arm over the next chair.
3. The geek girl who asks a lot of questions seats in the front.

Cinque Terre - Part II

Continuing our journey through all 5 of the Cinque Terre, I will show you some photos of Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. I already wrote my impressions and showed pictures of Monterosso and Vernazza here, in Part I. 

Corniglia was our second favourite. The path between Vernazza and Corniglia is very beautiful and there was something charming and special about the town's colourful houses laid on top of the cliff, contrasting with the so very blue sea. It might have helped that we stopped for a drink and some snacks in a bar that had tables and seats on a sort of balcony overlooking the sea, right on the edge of the cliff. 

Continuando a nossa ornada pelas 5 aldeias das Cinque Terre, vou agora mostrar imagens de Corniglia, Manarola e Riomaggiore. Já escrevi um pouco sobre as Cinque Terre e já mostrei fotos de Monterosso e Vernazza aqui, na Part I.

Corniglia foi a nossa segunda favorita. O trilho de Vernazza a Corniglia é muito bonito e há algo especial no contraste das casas coloridas da aldeia no topo da falésia com o azulão do mar. Talvez tenha ajudado o facto de termos parado para beber e comer qualquer coisa numa espécie de varanda sobre o mar, mesmo à beirinha da falésia.

Bebemos cocktails nesta varanda com esta vista... Este vai ser um daqueles momentos ao qual vou desejar voltar muitas vezes.

Toasts with anchovies or with pesto, cheese and 2 Aperol Spritz (Aperol, prosecco and soda). I'm not much for cocktails but Aperol Spritz I could have at anytime, because it's light, refreshing and tasty.
Tostas com anchovas ou pesto, queijo e 2 Aperol Spritz (Aperol, prosecco e soda). Não sou muito de cocktails mas podia beber Aperol Spritz a qualquer altura, porque é leve, fresco e muito saboroso.

Manarola

Volastra, an even smaller village we passed on our way to Manarola. The Blue trail doesn't go here, but since this part was closed we took alternative trails. The picture on the righ hand side shoes the church of Nostra Signora della Salute.

Riomaggiore

Riomaggiore was the one where we spent less time. When we went to buy tickets to take the train back to Genoa, we had to choose between a train 15 minutes or 2h after. We chose the first option. What we saw of Riomaggiore was nice but not at the top of our list. Although due to the limited time we had there I don't feel qualified to talk too much about it. 

Riomaggiore foi a aldeia onde passámos menos tempo. Quando fomos comprar os bilhetes de comboio para voltarmos a Génova percebemos que tinhamos que escolher entre um comboio daí a 15 minutos ou daí a 2h. Escolhemos o primeiro. O que vimos de Riomaggiore foi bom, mas não a colocou no topo da nossa lista. No entanto devido ao tempo limitado que lá estivemos não me sinto qualificada o suficiente para falar muito sobre este local. 

We really enjoyed our day, a day full of walking, photographing and of gorgeous views. I usually just write about my own experiences since I'm no one to give advice, but I can tell you how I would do it, given the chance to do it all over again. 

If we could do it again we:

1- would stay in one of the villages overnight so we could spent more time in each of them. 

2- would walk it again of course, it was just so much fun! 

3- would do it again in this season (April/May). It's already warm enough but not scorching hot like in the summer and the days are long. Also, in the peak season it gets really crowded and both the villages and the trails get really full of people. 

I hope one day all of you get to experience this beauty. Highly recommended!

Adoramos esta experiência e o nosso dia cheio de fotografias e paisagens lindíssimas. Geralmente apenas conto as minhas experiências porque não sou ninguém para dar conselhos, mas posso dizer como faria se tivesse oportunidade de fazer tudo outra vez.

Se pudéssemos repetir:

1- Passaríamos uma noite numa das aldeias, para podermos ter mais tempo em cada uma delas.  

2- Fariamos a caminhada outra vez claro, porque foi realmente divertido!

3- Faríamos outra vez nesta época (Abril/Maio). Já há calor o suficiente sem estar a escaldar como no Verão e os dias são longos. Além disso, em época alta tanto as aldeias como as trilhas ficam cheias de gente.

Espero que um dia todos vocês possam ver toda esta beleza. Recomendo vivamente!
