Penha Garcia - Portugal

Penha Garcia is a charming village located in the Idanha-a-Nova district. It sits on a hill and is surrounded by fields and stony mountains, the typical landscape of the region. In summary... it's gorgeous.

Resumindo... é lindo!

The dam and the mountain which is thought to have "fallen down" centuries ago, since its layers are facing up. At the bottom there are some houses, that are now a small museum, which was closed at the time.

It was a lovely morning that ended with a great picnic overlooking the mountains and the village sitting on the other side of the valley, Monsanto, which was where we went afterwards. Another great place that I will soon write about.

Cycling along the coast - Gothenburg

"What if we would leave work earlier today and go cycling?", he said. And she said yes.

And we spent a wonderful afternoon cycling, walking and enjoying the coast and the sunshine.
Here's the result.

Meet Pam, my best friend... yes, the bicycle

Doesn't that seem like the perfect place to be alone with your thoughts?

Saltholmen, where we took a shortcut, that became longer, but more fun and with a great view over the little marina.

Who doesn't want to cycle or walk with paths as nice as this?

That's one of the things I enjoy the most in Sweden - the appreciation for the sun. When the sun shines you should go out and enjoy it and no one looks twice if you say "I'm leaving earlier today, it's sunny..."

Sortelha - Portugal

We wanted to show as much as possible to our guests, and we took the chance to visit other places in the region, not too far from Guarda. Namely, historic old villages, with an unique charm given by their constructions almost purely in stone. We started in Sortelha, at a 45 min. drive from Guarda. I have written about it before, but Sortelha is so gorgeous and special that it deserves one more post full of pictures.

It's gorgeous, isn't it? Walking around in those narrow streets transport us to other times and makes our imagination fly. How was life then? If you ever find yourself in Portugal with some time to spare, visit the interior region and don't miss Sortelha.

Guarda - Portugal

Guarda is my hometown and although I have published here before about it, I didn't do it that many times. I go there nearly every time I go to Portugal, but it is very rarely that I actually take pictures in the city. That usually requires some guests to whom I show the views of my hometown. This time we walked around with Johan's parents who were in Portugal for the first time. It's a small town without so much to show but it was quite fun to walk around with them. They made me see my own city in a different way.

It was not a too fun city to grow up, as I always felt it was too small for my big wings. Now it's a different story of course. It has grown a lot and I actually enjoy going back there and feel the small town atmosphere where everyone knows everybody.
I will publish as well more about the region, showing the historic villages we visited. The first one will be Sortelha.

Agora a história é diferente claro.

Stenungsund - Sweden

Some weeks are more interesting than others. After a week of vacation I went back to work on Monday, had the national day of Sweden on Tuesday, in which no one worked, and then went on a two-day conference for work at Stenungsund. The place looked fantastic but unfortunately the weather didn't help much. Luckily, I had my vitamin D reserves on top from the wonderful sunshine I got in Portugal (posts to come soon). I had a great time anyway.

Guide to a happy unemployment - Newbie

I became unemployed in December 2015. It was not my first time, but I knew that this time it would be harder and probably longer. I had been unemployed in 2013 as well, but then I was open to work in basically any country and within a month I found myself a job. This time, I was restricted to a single country and a single city, which made things more difficult.

I was unemployed for a year and four months. When I look back I feel I made the most of my unemployment. I rested and relaxed, used the time to learn something new and to do things I enjoyed and didn't freak out as much a I could have. In general I was happy and I will remember this time as a positive experience.

I know it's not always easy to be unemployed but a positive mind set will always be helpful, no matter what the situation is. Guide to a happy unemployment is the title of my latest article for the Newbie Guide to Sweden and you can read it here

If you enjoy it pass along to your unemployed relatives or friends.

50 years

He left. After 50 years working there, he left.

Nowadays we move a lot more and change jobs for various reasons, so I can't even imagine what it feels like leaving after 50 years. Perhaps a mixture of longing and relief. A mixture of I will miss this with I can finally relax. It must feel weird.

I hope he will be happy.

His last day was when I was on vacation and when I came back I found this in his closet. Very symbolic.
