Douro river cruise

Peso da Régua is located by the Douro river and one of the biggest cities in the Douro wine region. In this previously written post I showed how one can get there from the east - driving in the best road in the world. Today I will show you how to get there from west, where Porto, the second largest city in Portugal is located. A couple of years ago we did a Douro river cruise. We boarded in Porto early in the morning and arrived in Régua just after lunch, getting breakfast and lunch on the cruise.

No post que escrevi antes mostrei como se pode chegar lá pelo lado a este - conduzindo pela melhor estrada do mundo. Hoje quero mostrar-vos como chegar lá de oeste, começando no Porto, a segunda maior cidade de Portugal. Há alguns anos fizemos um cruzeiro no rio Douro, começando no Porto de manhã cedinho e chegando à Régua a seguir ao almoço, e comendo o pequeno almoço e o almoço a bordo do cruzeiro.

 The day started out foggy and misty, but it turned out to be quite warm and sunny as we got to our destination. 

O dia começou nublado e cinzento, mas acabou por se tornar bastante quente e ensolarado quando chegamos ao nosso destino.

The cruise had a sunny deck where we could enjoy the views and take pictures of the small villages we passed by.

O cruzeiro tinha um deck ao sol onde podíamos apreciar a paisagem e tirar fotos das pequenas povoações que passavamos.

And because we were in the Douro region and on vacation we allowed ourselves a glass of port wine before lunch. 

E porque estávamos na região do Douro e de férias permitimo-nos um copo de vinho do porto mesmo antes do almoço.

The Douro river is quite broad near Porto, but as we navigate towards Régua it gets narrower. As the river gets narrower, the surrounding slopes get higher and more steep, and the number of vineyards increases. 

O rio Douro é bastante largo perto do Porto, mas vai ficando mais estreito quando navegamos em direção à Régua. À medida que fica mais e mais estreito, as encostas em volta ficam mais altas e íngremes, e o número de vinhas aumenta.

In my opinion the landscape also gets better and better as you navigate towards the interior of the country. I just love all the vineyards on the slopes.

Na minha opinião, a paisagem também fica mais e mais bonita quando navegamos para o interior do país. Eu adoro aquelas vinhas espalhadas pelas encostas.

Isn't it all gorgeous? And what about the vineyard in the last picture? It is actually in that wine estate that me and Johan will have a big party next year to celebrate our wedding. This picture was taken a few years ago when we had no idea about that! Life is funny in many ways.

Não é tudo lindo? E a vinha na última foto? Na verdade é nessa quinta que eu e Johan faremos uma grande festa no próximo ano para celebrar o nosso casamento. Esta foto foi tirada há alguns anos, quando não fazíamos idéia de que a íamos escolher! Às vezes a vida é engraçada.

More than a year ago I wrote here about running in the forest near home and how it beat me, because it was so hilly. I finished that post with "Today, the forest beat me. I'll take that as a challenge!". Well, today was the day! I went straight there facing the 700m hill and then I did sprints in the other hills, always without stopping. 

Me and the forest are finally even!

Há mais de um ano atrás, escrevi aqui sobre treinar na floresta aqui perto de casa e como a floresta me bateu nesse dia, por causa das subidas a pique. O final desse post foi "Hoje a floresta bateu-me. Vou tomar isso como um desafio!". Pois que hoje foi o dia! Fui direita à floresta, pela subida de 700m que vai de casa lá e depois fiz sprints nas outras subidas, sempre sem parar.

Eu e a floresta estamos finalmente empatadas!

Douro Valley - Best road in the world

Recently, the E-222 in the Douro Valley, north of Portugal was considered the best road in the world due to its spectacular views over the Douro wine region and river. Whether that is or not true I don't know. The world has a lot of roads and I haven't been to all (yet! eheh), but the E-222 between Pinhão and Régua is certainly beautiful and surrounded by a breathtaking landscape. The Douro Valley is actually mine and Johan's favourite region in Portugal and it is also where we will celebrate our wedding next year. When we were in Portugal last time we had to go there for a meeting and the E-222 was just on the way, so we took the chance to drive through it. 

Recentemente a E-222 no Douro, norte de Portugal, foi considerada a melhor estrada do mundo devido às suas vistas espectaculares sobre a região vinícola e o rio Douro. Se isso é ou não é verdade não sei. O mundo tem muitas estradas e eu ainda não passei por todas (ainda! eheh), mas a E-222 entre o Pinhão e a Régua é certamente bonita e rodeada por uma paisagem deslumbrante. O Vale do Douro é na verdade a região portuguesa preferida por mim e pelo Johan. e é também onde vamos celebrar o nosso casamento no próximo ano. Quando estivemos em Portugal da última vez tivemos que ir lá para uma reunião e a E-222 ficava mesmo em caminho e aproveitamos para passear.

Our first stop was before we reached the Douro Valley, still in the Beiras region. Driving from one region to the other one, we could see the landscape changing from stony to green, with more and more vineyards.

A primeira paragem foi ainda antes de chegar ao Vale do Douro, ainda na região das Beiras. Ao conduzir de uma região para a outra, observa-se uma mudança na paisagem, que muda de pedregosa para verdejante com mais e mais vinhas.

And then the more you drive the more you find yourself immersed and surrounded by vineyards and wine estates. The vines are cultivated on the terraces that surround the river and the whole thing just looks fantastic. 

E quanto mais nos embrenhamos no Douro mais damos por nós imersos e cercados por vinhedos e quintas que produzem vinhos. As videiras são cultivadas nos terraços que cercam o rio e o conjunto todo parece fantástico.

After a while we got to the bottom of the valley at the level of the river. Afterwards we stopped in Régua, but not for long. However, a couple of years ago we did stay in Régua for a few days and it was great. I ended up never publishing the pictures here, so I will take the chance now and show you a bit more of the region in the next post. 

A estrada continua e descemos até ao fundo do vale chegando ao nível do rio. Depois parámos na Régua, mas não por muito tempo. Há uns anos atrás passamos na Régua alguns dias e foi fantástico. Acabei por nunca publicar as fotos aqui e por isso vou aproveitar a oportunidade e mostrar um pouco mais da região no próximo post.

Monsanto - Portugal

The third historical village we visited in our trip was Monsanto. It is just across the valley from Penha Garcia, described in the previous post. Monsanto is well known and there are a lot of excursions busses stopping buy. On the highest point of Monsanto sits its castle, but instead of walking straight there we went around to see the landscape, once again made of green fields and large stones. A local man called us crazy and didn't really understand why we wanted to look at stones. Having lived there all his life he thought they were ugly and boring. We disagreed.

A terceira aldeia histórica que visitamos foi Monsanto, que fica do lado oposto do vale de Penha Garcia, no post anterior. Monsanto é mais conhecida e popular com autocarros de excursões que por ali param. No ponto mais alto de Monsanto ficam as ruínas do castelo, mas em vez de irmos lá directamente, fomos em volta para vermos a paisagem, composta por campos verdes e barrocos. Um local com quem nos cruzamos chamou-nos de doidos, e não percebeu por que queríamos olhar para um monte de pedras. Tendo vivido lá toda a sua vida, ele acha que são apenas barrocos feios e sem graça. Nós discordamos.

It was very peaceful and free to walk around and see the almost infinite horizon.

A paisagem e o ambiente eram muito pacíficos e foi agradável ver o horizonte quase no infinito.

Inside the castle ruins one can walk on top of the wall and explore the different entrances and corners.

Dentro das ruínas do castelo, pode-se andar no topo da muralha e explorar as diferentes entradas e recantos.

The streets and houses in the village itself are also made of stone, since they have an almost infinite source of it in that region. However, the village is not cold as one might think as the locals plant beautiful flower pots and fruit trees, like cherry trees.
As ruas e as casas da própria aldeia também são feitas de pedra, já que existe uma fonte quase infinita de pedra nas redondezas. No entanto, a aldeia não é fria, como se pode pensar, pois os habitantes locais enfeitam as ruas com vasos de flores e árvores frutíferas, como cerejeiras.

Some of the houses were even constructed taking advantage of the stone itself, like the one on the picture above on the left. It would have been very interesting to see that house in the inside. 

Algumas das casas foram construídas aproveitando a própria pedra, como o da foto acima à esquerda. Teria sido muito interessante ver essa casa por dentro.

I hope you have enjoyed the historical villages I have showed you. If asked to choose my favourite among the three we visited I couldn't, because they all have their own charm and are all special in a different way. Our trip did not finish here though, as we continued to explore Portugal for a few more days, as I will show soon.

Espero que tenham gostado das aldeias históricas que vos mostrei. Se me pedissem para escolher a minha favorita entre as três que visitamos, não iria conseguir escolher, porque todas têm o seu próprio charme e são especiais de maneiras diferente.
