Northeast region of São Miguel

On our second day in São Miguel the weather was cloudy and grey, so we explored the Northeast of the island, known to always have better weather, in the hope that the viewpoints wouldn't be too foggy. 

No nosso segundo dia em São Miguel o dia acordou nublado e cinza. Aproveitamos então para explorar o Nordeste da ilha, conhecido por ter um clima melhor e na esperança de que os miradouros não estivessem muito cobertos.

We started in Ribeira dos Caldeirões, a small park with cute stony houses, plants and a waterfall. 

Começamos na Ribeira dos Caldeirões, um pequeno parque com casinhas em pedra, plantas e uma cachoeira.

We proceeded to Feteira Pequena, a small village with just over a dozen houses. The church and the street that lead to it were quite especial and somehow typical azorean, with dark volcanic stones included in the constructions. It looked very cute, especially with the sea right there in the back.
Seguimos para a Feteira Pequena, uma pequena aldeia com pouco mais de uma dúzia de casas. A igreja e a rua até lá eram engraçadas e típicas dos açores, com pedras vulcânicas escuras incluídas nas construções. Era uma aldeia charmosa, especialmente com o mar ali mesmo atrás.

We just keep driving and stopping in all the viewpoints marked in our map. Some of them are actually popular for whale watching and we saw people using big binoculars. The Miradouro do Farol do Arnel is a viewpoint over a lighthouse, the sea and rocky beaches. One can also walk down to the lighthouse and tiny village. The road is actually drivable but it was so incredibly steep and difficult to even walk, that we were glad we hadn't tried to take the car there. The way back and up was some great exercise! 

Continuamos a conduzir e a parar em todos os miradouros marcados no nosso mapa. Alguns deles são populares para a observação de baleias e vimos pessoas com grandes binóculos. O Miradouro do Farol do Arnel é um miradouro sobre o farol, o mar e praias rochosas. Pode também caminhar-se até ao farol e à pequena aldeia lá no fundo. A estrada é tão incrivelmente íngreme que é difícil de fazer a andar e ficamos contentes por não termos tentado levar o carro para lá. O caminho de volta foi obviamente um ótimo exercício!

Instead of sand the coast is rich in volcanic stones. One can even see the different layers made by the time in places where the cliff broke.
Em vez de areia a costa é rica em rochas vulcânicas. Podemos mesmo ver camadas diferentes, resultado do passar do tempo, nos locais onde a rocha quebrou.

I found all the viewpoints very well taken care of. Many of them have stone built grills, which are very popular during the weekends, as everyone loves a good barbecue. Can you imagine spending a Sunday afternoon enjoying a barbecue with this view!
Achei os miradouros todos muito bem cuidados. Muitos deles têm churrasqueiras construídas em pedra, que são muito populares aos fins de semana, pois todos adoram um bom churrasco. Imaginem passar uma tarde de domingo a fazer um belo churrasco e com aquela vista!

We managed to see Ponta da Madrugada just before all the clouds took over the sky. We were on the way to Faial da Terra, another village, when it started raining as well. We had planned to go for a hike known as Sanguinho and drove to its start. We stayed inside the car some good 15 minutes waiting to see if the rain would stop and evaluating how wet the people coming from the trail looked. The rain became a drizzle and since we are not there everyday we decided to take the change and do the hike. We didn't take many pictures because it was all quite wet, but by the time we got to the waterfall Salto do Prego the rain had already stopped and we could better enjoy the hike.

Conseguimos ver a Ponta da Madrugada mas foi mesmo antes de ficar encoberto. Estávamos a caminho para Faial da Terra, outra aldeia, quando começou também a chover. Tínhamos planeado fazer uma caminhada conhecida como Sanguinho e conduzimos até ao inicio do trilho. Ficamos dentro do carro uns bons 15 minutos a ver se a chuva passava e a avaliar o quão molhadas as pessoas que vinham da trilha estavam. A chuva acabou por se tornar miudinha e uma vez que não estamos lá todos os dias, decidimos fazer a caminhada. Não temos muitas fotos porque estava tudo bastante molhado, mas quando chegamos ao Salto do Prego, a chuva já tinha parado e pudemos então aproveitar melhor a caminhada.

We drove back through Furnas but it was so foggy that we couldn't even see the lake, even though we were driving right next to it. As usual we finished off the day by eating some more typical food. This time we ate mussels (lapas) and Mulata's ice cream. Mulata is a delicious chocolate crispy cookie made in São Miguel. I love these cookies (my friend had showed them before) and we can't find them in the continent, so I took the chance to eat them there. The ice cream was also really good.

Na volta passamos novamente nas Furnas, mas estava tão nublado que desta vez nem a lagoa vimos, embora estivéssemos a passar mesmo ao lado. Terminámos o dia a experimentar mais comida típica. Desta vez comemos lapas açorianas e sorvete de Mulata. Mulata é uma bolacha de chocolate crocante feita em São Miguel. Eu adoro estas bolachas (a minha amiga já mas tinha mostrado antes) e como não se encontram à venda no continente, aproveitei a oportunidade para as comer lá. O gelado de Mulata também era muito bom.

Furnas - São Miguel

After a well deserved introductory post of the Azores and São Miguel let's start our virtual trip through the green island. We started by visiting Gorreana, one of the two tea plantations in São Miguel, and the only place in Europe able to grow tea leaves due to its climate. We were able to visit the factory itself and to walk among the plantation, that surrounded both sides of the road and had a view to the coast (as almost everything in the island...). 

Depois de um merecido post de introdução aos Açores e a São Miguel, vamos começar a nossa viagem virtual pela ilha verde. Começamos por visitar a Gorreana, uma das duas plantações de chá em São Miguel, e o único lugar na Europa capaz de cultivar folhas de chá devido ao seu clima único. Podiamos visitar a própria fábrica e caminhar entre a plantação, que cercava os dois lados da estrada e tinha uma vista para a costa (como quase tudo na ilha ...).

Afterwards we headed to Furnas, stopping in two lookout points on the way there: miradouro dos Barreiros and miradouro do Pico do Ferro.

From the last we could also see the Furnas lagoon for the first time. Furnas is located on a volcanic active region, where it is possible to see hot springs and fumaroles.

A partir do Pico do Ferro vimos a lagoa das Furnas pela primeira vez. As Furnas estão localizadas numa região vulcânica activa onde é possível ver as caldeiras e fumarolas.

The soil is so hot that the water is boiling and the released heat is used to cook. The most traditional dish cooked in Furnas is cozido, a stew of meats, sausage, blood sausage , greens and roots, cooked for about 6h under the soil. Each restaurant has its own hole(s) marked and it was quite interesting to see people coming to take or place a new pot of stew. The ingredients cook slowly and together, resulting in a very tasty dish. I heard that sometimes it can taste a bit like sulfur, but our local experts directed us to a restaurant in the local camping site where the cozido was delicious and without a trace of sulfur. 

O solo está tão quente que a água está a ferver e o calor fornecido é aproveitado para cozinhar. O prato mais tradicional é o cozido das Furnas, um guisado de carnes, chouriço, morcela, folhas verdes e raízes, cozinhados cerca de 6h sob o solo. Cada restaurante tem os seus próprios buracos marcados e foi interessante ver pessoas a levar ou a colocar uma nova panela de cozido. Os ingredientes cozinham devagar e juntos, resultando num prato muito saboroso. Ouvi dizer que o cozido às vezes sabe um pouco a enxofre, mas os nossos especialistas locais indicaram-nos o restaurante no parque de campismo local onde o cozido estava delicioso e sem vestígios de enxofre.

The town of Furnas

On the way to buy bolos lêvedos, a sweet flat bread typical from the island, we spotted the upside down house. There's no pictures of the flat breads because we ate them all before... Ok, it's actually not true. We ate them for breakfast, as a ham and cheese toast, as advised. It was delicious!

A caminho de ir comprar bolos lêvedos, um pão doce e plano típico da ilha, vimos a casa de cabeça para baixo. Não há fotos dos pães porque os comemos todos antes ... Ok, não é verdade. Comemos os pães de manhã ao pequeno-almoço, em forma de tosta de fiambre e queijo, conforme nos foi recomendado. Estavam uma delícia!

The Terra Nostra park is in the center of Furnas and is a gorgeous place to go for a walk surrounded by a large collection of trees, flowers and fishes. 

O parque Terra Nostra está no centro das Furnas e é um lugar óptimo para dar uma volta rodeados por uma grande coleção de árvores, flores e peixes.

In the center of the park is a huge hot pool with iron enriched water, where one can bath and relax. It might sound funny to bathe in the middle of a park, but it is something popular both among tourists and locals, and once you get in the water you become too relaxed to care about anything else.

No centro do parque há uma enorme piscina quente com água enriquecida em ferro, onde se pode tomar banho e relaxar. Pode parecer estranho tomar banho no meio de um parque, mas as piscina é bastante popular entre turistas e habitantes locais, e uma vez que se entra na água, fica-se demasiado relaxado para esse tipo de preocupações.

After the relaxing bath we thought we were done for the day and would just go home, have a proper shower and go for dinner. As we left Furnas we got a phone call from our friend that had left work and was on her way to meet us. She promised to show us a secret spot that not many people knew. It involved some walking and then an entrance to a very odd path that I would never find again... 

Depois do banho relaxante, pensamos que o dia estava a chegar ao fim e que íamos para casa tomar banho para depois irmos jantar. Quando saímos de Furnas, recebemos um telefonema da nossa amiga que tinha saído do trabalho e estava a caminho. Ela prometeu mostrar-nos um sítio secreto que poucas pessoas conhecem. Isso envolveu passarmos por uma entrada para um "caminho" muito estranho que nunca mais serei capaz de encontrar...

It was all worth it because afterwards we got an amazing view over the Furnas Lagoon and this time just for us. 

Valeu a pena porque a seguir conseguimos uma vista magnifica para a Lagoa das Furnas e desta vez só para nós.

As the days are long in the summer and we were so happy to be on vacation that we had almost endless energy we ended up also visiting Lagoa do Congro, another lagoon formed in the crater of an inactive volcano. To get there one has to walk down through a path among the trees for about 10 minutes. Once there, we do feel like we are in the center of an old volcano. It's beautiful! (but hard to show in pictures)

Uma vez que os dias são longos e andávamos tão felizes felizes por estar de férias e tínhamos energia quase infinita, acabamos por ainda ir à Lagoa do Congro, formada na cratera de um vulcão inactivo. Para lá chegar lá é preciso caminhar por um caminho entre árvores por cerca de 10 minutos e quando se chega sentimos mesmo que estamos no centro de um antigo vulcão. É lindo! (Mas difícil de mostrar em fotos)

We finally finished off this day so full of new things with a great dinner of fish pasta stew and grilled fish. It was a great first day, and so much more was to come.

Finalmente terminamos esse dia tão cheio de coisas novas com um excelente jantar de massinha de cherne e peixe grelhado. Foi um grande primeiro dia e havia ainda tanto por ver.
