Lisbon in 1 day

Lisbon deserves way more than 1 day of one's time, but if for some reason all you have is one day to spend in the Portuguese capital, here's my suggestion.

Me and Johan have been in Lisbon several times, but it was his brother's first time (he had actually passed by once before, but not seen anything), so we showed him all the highlights.

Lisboa merece mais do que um dia do nosso tempo, mas se por algum motivo tudo o que têm é um dia para passar na capital portuguesa, aqui fica a minha sugestão.

Eu e o Johan já estivemos em Lisboa várias vezes, mas foi a primeira vez do irmão dele (já lá tinha passado uma vez antes, mas não viu nada), por isso mostrámos-lhe o melhor da cidade.

We started north of the city centre with a glimpse of the aqueduct.
Começamos a norte do centro da cidade com uma mirada rápida sobre o aqueduto.

Walk through Parque Eduardo VII, pass by Marquês de Pombal (a giant roundabout, left picture) and continue down the avenue (Avenida da Liberdade, right picture)

Don't miss the traditional trams in the narrow streets. There's usually loads of tourists around, so they are easy to spot. 

Não percam os eléctricos tradicionais nas ruas estreitas. Há geralmente muitos turistas em volta, por isso são fáceis de detectar.

And get lost in the narrow streets and stairs of the old neighbourhoods.

Percam-se nas ruelas estreitas dos bairros mais antigos.

Praça do Rossio

Sooner or later you will end up down in Rossio or Rua Augusta. Chiado, Praça da Figueira and Terreiro do Paço are around there and shouldn't be missed. 

Mais cedo ou mais tarde vão acabar por ir parar ao Rossio ou à Rua Augusta. O Chiado, a Praça da Figueira e o Terreiro do Paço são ali perto e não devem ser esquecidos.

Rua Augusta has become quite touristic over time, but some new shops can be quite interesting, like the one called "The fantastic world of Portuguese preserves" (O mundo fantástico das conservas Portuguesas). The whole shop is decorated with cans containing mostly tuna, but also sardines and others. The cans on the walls have a year written on it and a few facts about that year. I think it makes a great birthday gift, for example. 

A Rua Augusta tornou-se bastante turística ao longo do tempos, mas as lojas novas também podem ser interessantes, como a que se chama "O fantástico das conservas portuguesas". A loja é maioritariamente decorada com latas de atum, mas tem também algumas de sardinha e outros. Cada lata na parede tem um ano escrito e alguns factos sobre esse ano. Acho que fazem um óptimo presente de aniversário, por exemplo.

We took the train at Cais do Sodré and headed to Belém, where we ate lunch (grilled fish, my favourite!). Dessert was of course Pastéis de Belém - 2 each, the perfect amount. Yes, there's 7 pastéis on the plate, because my sister lives nearby, and she ate only one. 

Apanhámos o comboio no Cais do Sodré e fomos até Belém, onde almoçamos (peixe grelhado, o meu preferido!). A sobremesa foi, naturalmente, Pastéis de Belém - 2 cada, a quantidade perfeita. Sim, há 7 pastéis no prato, porque a minha irmã mora ali perto e comeu só um.

After such lunch I recommend you a nice walk around Belém. 

Depois de almoço recomenda-se um belo passeio por Belém.

Afterwards, we went back to Lisbon and visited the city's castle - Castelo de São Jorge. From there, visitors get one of the best views over Lisbon and the Tagus river, and inside they can walk along the walls.

Depois voltámos a Lisboa e visitamos o Castelo de São Jorge. De lá, os visitantes têm uma das melhores vistas sobre Lisboa e o rio Tejo, e por dentro podem andar pelas muralhas.

Get lost in the cosy neighbourhoods near the castle - Alfama, Mouraria, Graça. Don't miss the lookout point Portas do sol. 

Percam-se nos bairros acolhedores perto do castelo - Alfama, Mouraria, Graça. Não percam o miradouro Portas do sol.

We finished off the day at TimeOut market, a great place to try and eat different types of food. A lot of the stalls offer Portuguese food, including some ran by famous Portuguese chefs. Buy a few small dishes (kind of like tapas), a glass of wine and enjoy the atmosphere. 

Acabamos o dia no mercado TimeOut, um óptimo lugar para experimentar diferentes tipos de comida. Há muita comida portuguesa em oferta, incluindo alguns sítios que são administrados por chefs portugueses famosos. Peçam alguns pratos pequenos (tipo tapas), um copo de vinho e aproveitem o ambiente.

Be aware that after spending one day in Lisbon you will want to go back for more!

Family in Sweden - the last day

We had driven around the region, we had been several days in the city, the islands couldn't be visited because works in a key tramline (it would take too long for us to get there), so we went for a walk around Stensjön (a lake) and Gunnebo (a palace/manor house). The forecast promised no rain, so we knew we could walk the whole day, which we did.  

Já tínhamos explorado a região de carro, já tínhamos ido várias vezes à cidade, não podiamos ir às ilhas porque uma das linhas de eléctrico estava interrompida (levaria demasiado tempo para lá chegarmos), por isso fomos dar uma volta a Stensjön (um lago) e Gunnebo (um palácio/palacete). A previsão metereológica dizia que não ia chover, então sabíamos que podíamos caminhar o dia todo e foi o que fizemos.

We even got to see the fireman training a rescue on ice, which was very interesting. I particularly enjoyed the part when the victim, a huge man, was having a lot of fun jumping on the ice until it broke.

Tivemos até direito a ver os bombeiros a treinar um resgate no gelo, o que foi bastante interessante. Eu gostei particularmente da parte em que a vítima, um homem enorme, se estava a divertir imenso aos saltos no gelo até partir.

There's nothing more Swedish than a bunch of red houses in a snowy landscape.

Não há nada mais sueco do que um monte de casas vermelhas numa paisagem de neve.

And that was how the first visit of my family to Sweden ended. We obviously hope that a lot more visits will be made in the future, including some in the spring and summer. Then, I can just take them to same exact places and it will feel like it's all new again!

E foi assim que terminou a primeira visita da minha família à Suécia. Obviamente, esperamos que muitas mais visitas sejam feitas no futuro, especialmente na primavera e no verão. Nem tenho que me preocupar, posso só levá-los outra vez aos mesmos sítios que tudo lhes vai parecer que é novo!

Family in Sweden - Easter

After a full week of sightseeing and big events, like us getting married, it was time for a couple of calmer days. It was Easter and we had planned to celebrate it the Swedish way. Or should I say our way, as all families have different traditions.

Depois de uma semana inteira de passeios e eventos especiais, como o nosso casamento, estava na altura de termos uns dias mais calmos. Era Páscoa e tínhamos planeado celebra-la à maneira sueca. Ou devo dizer à nossa maneira aqui, porque todas as famílias têm as suas próprias tradições.


1. See Easter decorations
Easter reminds us that spring is coming and it brings hope for warmer days full of light. The colourful ribbons everywhere bring us that message and cheer us up after a long cold winter.

A Páscoa lembra-nos que a primavera está a chegar e traz esperança para dias mais quentes e mais cheios de luz. As fitas coloridas um pouco em toda a parte trazem essa mensagem e animam-nos depois de um inverno longo e frio.

2. Buy and eat lots of candy

To be fair, many swedes do this every saturday, but for those who don't Easter is the perfect excuse chance to buy a bag of candy and enjoy it during the day while making puzzles or whatching movies on the sofa.

Para dizer a verdade muitos suecos fazem isso todos os sábados, mas para os que não o fazem regularmente, a Páscoa é a desculpa perfeita para comprar um saco de gomas e come-las durante o dia, enquanto se faz um puzzle ou se vêem filmes no sofá.

3. Hide/Find Easter eggs

The adults hide Easter eggs full of treats all over the garden and the children try to find them afterwards. This is a German tradition and as there's German blood in the family, Johan grew up with it. Me, on the other hand, had never been on a hunt for Easter eggs, so it was very obvious that the Swedes would hide the eggs and the Portuguese would look for them. We had loads of fun!

3. Esconder/Encontrar ovos da Páscoa

Os adultos escondem ovos de Páscoa cheios de guloseimas no jardim e as crianças tentam encontrá-los depois. Esta é uma tradição alemã e como há sangue alemão na família, o Johan cresceu com esta brincadeira. Eu, por outro lado, nunca tinha caçado ovos de Páscoa e foi portanto bastante óbvio que seriam os suecos a esconder e os portugueses a procurar. Foi tão divertido!

Será que há ovos entre os arbustos?

Yes! Sim!

Maybe behind the trees? Or on the roof of the deck? Among the wooden logs?

Talvez atrás das árvores? Ou em cima do telhado do pátio? Ou entre os paus de madeira?

Yes! Yes! Yes!

Sim! Sim! Sim!

The eggs were of course full of chocolates and other sweet treats. As good children that we are, we all shared our finds equally, because it's not about the content of the eggs, it's about the hunting!

Os ovos estavam cheios de chocolates e outros doces. Como boas crianças que somos partilhamos os nossos achados igualmente, porque não é o conteúdo dos ovos que importa, mas sim a caça em si!

4. Eat Swedish traditional food

Sill (herring) in at least 4 different ways, boiled eggs with caviar, smoked salmon and pies (cheese and salmon)

After the egg hunting we ate several Swedish traditional delicacies for dinner, including shots of akvavit, a distilled spirit from Scandinavia. My contribution is usually a bowl of tuna paté, that all enjoy and it seems to fit well with the rest of the food. 

4. Comer iguarias Suecas
Sill (arenque) de pelo menos 4 maneiras diferentes, ovos cozidos com caviar, salmão fumado e tarte de queijo e salmão.
Depois da caça ao ovo comemos várias iguarias tradicionais suecas para o jantar, incluindo shots de akvavit, uma bebida  destilada da escandiávia. A minha contribuição é sempre uma tigela de patê de atum, que todos gostam e que vai bem com o resto dos pratos.

After Easter my family's time in Sweden was coming to an end, as there was only one day left in their trip. I will soon post about it as well. 

Depois da Páscoa, a estadia da minha família na Suécia estava a chegar ao fim, pois restava apenas um dia aqui. Em breve mostrarei fotos desse dia.

Family in Sweden - Day 7 - Gothenburg

A walk along the Göta river was still missing and that was what we did, taking both sides of the river in the same day.

Ainda não tínhamos dado um passeio à beira do rio Göta e foi isso mesmo que fizemos, nas duas margens. 

We started at the lipstick building (the red and white building in the pictures), where the Viking, an old ship turned into a restaurant is moored. 

Começamos no edifício do batom (o prédio vermelho e branco nas fotos), onde o Viking, um navio transformado em restaurante está ancorado.

From there we followed along the river, passed the opera house (building in the picture above) and ended up at the Maritiman museum. The Maritiman museum is quite especial as it doesn’t have regular exhibitions, but instead the visitors get to visit several different vessels, both inside and outside, including a ship, a destroyer and a submarine.

De lá seguimos ao longo do rio, passámos a casa da ópera (edificio na foto acima) e acabámos no museu Maritiman. O museu Maritiman é bastante especial, pois não tem exposições mas os visitantes podem andar dentro e fora de várias embarcações, incluindo um navio, um destróier e um submarino.

The highlight of our visit was definitely the submarine. Getting inside was a bit scary but visiting the interior was really interesting. I can only imagine how it feels to be inside one under water, for hours or days, as everything was very tight and claustrophobic. 

O destaque da nossa visita foi mesmo o submarino. Entrar lá para dentro foi um pouco assustador, mas visitar o interior foi muito interessante. É tudo muito apertado e claustrofóbico e imagino como é estar dentro de um e andar debaixo de água durante horas ou dias.

Inside the museum - all the vessels are connected so the visitors can easily go from one to the other. Some of them were quite large and we would have lost track of where we were, if it wasn’t for all the signs put by the museum. 

Dentro do museu - todas as embarcações estão ligadas para que os visitantes possam facilmente ir de um barco para outro. Alguns deles eram muito grandes e teríamos andado perdidos, se não fosse pelos sinais colocados pelo museu.

A few hours later we left the museum and had a picnic lunch by the river. Afterwards we took the ferry and crossed to the other side of the river to walk on Eriksberg, one of my favourite neighbourhoods in the city.

Poucas horas depois, saímos do museu e fizemos um piquenique à beira rio. Depois apanhamos o ferry e atravessamos o rio para o outro lado, para andar em Eriksberg, um dos meus bairros favoritos da cidade.

Stena Line has daily connections to both Denmark and Germany. The cruises are giant.

A Stena Line faz ligacões diárias à Dinamarca e à Alemanha. Os cruzeiros são gigantescos.

Eriksberg used to be a shipyard where ships got built and fixed. The giant crane is still standing there and is part of the landscape, of the now modern and trendy Eriksberg. After a long nice walk enjoying the river views, we took the ferry back and stopped at Röda sten (it means red stone) art museum. We walked a bit more around there and even got to see some deers in the little forest behind the museum.

Eriksberg costumava ser um estaleiro onde os navios eram construídos e arranjados. O guindaste gigante ainda está lá e faz parte da paisagem, do que é agora um bairo moderno e trendy. Depois de um passeio longo e agradável à beira rio, apanhamos o ferry de volta e paramos em Röda sten (significa pedra vermelha), um museu de arte. Caminhamos mais um pouco por ali e até conseguimos ver alguns veados na mini floresta atrás do museu.

As a joke someone painted a stone red just next to the museum and it is now also part of the landscape. Eriksberg crane can be seen on the other side.

Como brincadeira, alguém pintou uma pedra vermelha ao lado do museu e agora também faz parte da paisagem. O guindaste de Eriksberg pode ser visto do outro lado do rio.

At this time, the sun was almost setting but it was to cold to stay and appreciate the golden hour, so we went back home. Besides that, we had already walked quilometres and we were looking forward to some sitting and a warm cup of tea. 

A esta hora, já o sol se estava quase a pôr, mas estava demasiado frio para ficarmos a ver o pôr do sol, e por isso voltamos para casa. Além disso, já tínhamos andado tanto que já só queríamos sentarmo-nos e beber um cha quentinho.
