Skagen - Fredrikshamn - Saeby (Day 2)

On the second day, we left Skagen after breakfast and headed south to find the sand-covered church. The church was originally built in the 14th century and the tower was added later during the 15th century. It total the building was 45m high. At some point in the 1700's sand from the surrounding dunes covered the church and people had to dig an opening to be able to use it. In 1795 the church was closed and partly demolished. The tower was left standing for navigational purposes, and it is the only visible part of the building nowadays. 

No segundo dia deixamos Skagen a seguir ao pequeno-almoço e rumamos a sul para vermos a igreja coberta de areia. A igreja foi originalmente construída no século XIV e a torre foi adicionada mais tarde durante o século XV. No total o edifício tinha 45 metros de altura. No século XVIII uma tempestade de areia das dunas circunvizinhas cobriu a igreja e as pessoas tinham que escavar uma abertura para poder ir à igreja. Em 1795 a igreja foi fechada e parcialmente demolida. A torre foi deixada para fins de orientação e é hoje em dia a única parte visível do edifício.

It was a hot dry summer in Europe and not even the Scandinavian countries escaped. The yellow fields in the Danish countryside showed very well the kind of summer we got. Temperatures aside, I enjoyed seeing and taking pictures of this unusual landscape. 

Foi um verão quente e seco na Europa e nem os países escandinavos escaparam. Os campos amarelos dinamarqueses mostram muito bem o tipo de verão que tivemos. Temperaturas à parte, gostei de ver e tirar fotos desta paisagem anormalmente colorida.

We stayed in a spa hotel a bit away from the center and walked along the coast to find a restaurant. We were starving and went to the most popular fish restaurant in town, where we were forgotten and had to wait an hour for our dishes! Apart from that the food was quite delicious, but by then we would have eaten anything. 

Ficamos num spa hotel fora do centro e fomos ao longo da costa até encontrar um restaurante. Estávamos completamente esfomeados e encontramos o restaurante de peixe mais popular da cidade, onde fomos esquecidos e tivemos que esperar uma hora pelos nossos pratos! Apesar de tudo, a comida estava deliciosa mas tínhamos tanta fome que teríamos comido qualquer coisa. 

After dinner it was already dark and we just walked back and crushed exhausted. The day after would be a no-cycling day and there would be plenty of time to explore the beautiful town of Saeby.

Depois do jantar já estava escuro e voltamos ao hotel exaustos. O dia seguinte seria um dia sem bicicleta e haveria muito tempo para explorar a bela vila de Saeby.

Dealing with Cancer in Sweden - Betül's Story - Newbie

My latest article in The Newbie Guide to Sweden was a very special one. It tells the story of Betül, a colleague from work. She moved to Sweden to work as a researcher and a few months later she was diagnosed cancer. Imagine that! Barely adapted to a whole new life in a new country and bam! 

The story ends well, because she is cancer-free now, but I thought this article ought to be written and shared. I find the story inspiring and maybe even helpful to those who might know someone or even be themselves in a similar situation.

Happy 2019

I hope you all had a great Christmas season and I wish you a 2019 full of great and memorable moments.

Espero que todos tenham tido uma óptima época de natalícia e desejo a todos um 2019 cheio de momentos memoráveis.

We spent New Year's Eve in Paris and it was lovely. More on that later, but for now here is the gorgeous Eiffel tower - the most photographed monument in the world. 

Nós passamos o ano em Paris e foi fantástico. Mais sobre isso depois, mas por enquanto, aqui está a linda torre Eiffel - o monumento mais fotografado do mundo.

I've seen a lot of high profile bloggers and influencers posting their last picture of 2018 and their first picture of 2019 (all great of course) and I laughed when I looked at mine. So, to prove that I'm neither here are my pictures. They were both taken in an 80's party in Paris and I was having too much fun to care about how good they were, all I wanted was a memory. 

Vi muitos bloguers famosos e influenciadores a mostrar a sua última foto de 2018 e a primeira de 2019 (todas perfeitas, claro) e eu ri-me quando fui ver as minhas. Então, para provar que não nenhum dos dois aqui estão as minhas fotos. Ambas foram tiradas numa festa dos anos 80 em Paris e estava-me a divertir demasiado para me importar com as fotos, tudo o que eu queria era uma lembrança.

Gothenburg - Fredrikshamn - Skagen (Day 1)

It was late June and we still hadn't plan any summer vacation. We wanted to do something active and fun, but didn't really know what. Then a colleague at work talked about her plans and how she was taking a ferry over to Denmark and cycling near the coast. Three weeks later off we went.

We took the ferry from Gothenburg to Fredrikshamn, which took about 4 hours (ignore the cycling prediction time on the map, I couldn't get rid of it). It was the only time we had to wear long sleeves.

Era final de junho e ainda não tínhamos planeado férias de verão. Queríamos fazer algo activo e divertido, mas não sabíamos bem o quê. Até que uma colega de trabalho falou sobre os seus planos e em como ia apanhar o ferry para a Dinamarca e andar de bicicleta pela costa. Três semanas depois partimos.

Fomos de ferry de Gotemburgo a Fredrikshamn, que levou aproximadamente 4 horas (ignorem o tempo para bicicleta dado no mapa, não me consegui livrar dele). Foi a única vez que tivemos que usar mangas compridas.

We had planned a light first day, to get used to the ride and the extra weight on our bikes. We rode all the way up to Skagen, the northernmost town in Denmark, located on the Skagen Odde peninsula. Half of the ride was near a car road, but never missed a chance to take a nice picture when the landscape asked for it.  

Nós tínhamos planeado um primeiro dia leve, para nos habituarmos à viagem e ao peso extra nas bicicletas. Fizemos o caminho até Skagen, a cidade mais a norte da Dinamarca, localizada na península Skagen Odde. Metade do trajeto foi feito à beira de uma estrada de carros, mas valeu a pena e nunca perdemos oportunidades para tirar fotos giras, sempre que a paisagem pedia.

Then we left the road and continued through smaller and nearly empty roads.

Depois deixamos a estrada e continuamos por caminhos menores e quase vazios. 

The peninsula is usually quite windy and the sandy beach changes constantly. The town, however, is gorgeous and cosy, like only a vacation town can be. It has beautiful houses and gardens, and a center full of bars and restaurants. 

A península é geralmente muito ventosa e a praia muda constantemente. A cidade, no entanto, é linda e aconchegante, como apenas uma cidade à beira mar consegue ser, com as suas casas e jardins arranjados e um centro cheio de bares e restaurantes.

The branch of land north of Skagen is called Grenen and it is about 5 km wide. In the area, one can find the Skagen lighthouse, a bunker museum and a bird watching area. Skagen is the place in Denmark where the most bird species can be experienced, a total of 367 out of 471 bird species in the country (wikipedia).

O pedaço de terra a norte de Skagen é chamado Grenen e tem cerca de 5 km de largura. Na área, pode encontrar-se o farol de Skagen, um museu com bunkers e uma área de observação de pássaros. Skagen é o sítio na Dinamarca onde se pode avistar o maior número de espécies de aves, um total de 367 das 471 espécies de aves do país (wikipedia).

In the peak of the summer the beaches are very popular, especially at the very tip of the Grenen. We walked there, but one can also take a train that runs through the sand. The train ride includes quite some queueing...
No pico do verão as praias são bastante populares, especialmente na ponta do Grenen. Nós fomos a andar até lá, mas também se pode apanhar uma espécie de comboio que vai pela areia. No bilhete de comboio está incluída uma longa fila... 

On the west coast, near the tip, we have the north sea and the water is significantly colder than on the east coast. There we found ourselves almost alone, when minutes before we were among a crowd, and could finally enjoy our egg sandwiches in peace. 

Na costa oeste, perto da ponta, temos o mar do norte e a água é bastante mais fria que na costa leste. Assim encontramos algum sossego do lado mais frio, quando minutos antes estávamos entre uma multidão, e pudemos finalmente comer as nossas sandes de ovo cozido em paz.

After a well deserved shower, we went out for a walk in the city and dinner.

We finished off the day enjoying some danish beer and enjoying the view from our balcony.

It was a really good first day, full of new sights and experiences. It was also quite a long day and in the evening it didn't feel like we had left Gothenburg that same morning. 

Foi um primeiro dia muito bom, cheio de paisagens e experiências novas. Também foi um longo dia e à noite nem dava para acreditar que tínhamos deixado Gothenburg nessa mesma manhã.
