Vyšehrad - Praha

Vyšehrad é um forte localizado aqui em Praga. Foi construído no topo de um monte, virado para o rio Vltava e tem uma vista fantástica sobre a cidade. Fica um pouco mais longe do centro, o que torna o local mais tranquilo e com menos turistas. Reza a lenda que foi em Vyšehrad que nasceu o primeiro ajuntamento de pessoas, que mais tarde se tornaria a cidade de Praga, mas não há provas concretas que suportem esta teoria.

Vyšehrad is a fort located here in Prague. It was built on top of a hill, overlooking the Vltava's river and it has an amazing view over the city. It's slightly off the center and a more quite place as there are less tourists that come this far. There is a legend that considers Vyšehrad as the location of the very first settlement, which later became the city of Prague, however, no evidence supports this theory.

Dentro do forte encontra-se a basílica de São Pedro e São Paulo, com o respectivo cemitério onde se podem encontrar muitos músicos e artistas checos.

O passeio em volta das muralhas é giríssimo e pode estender-se até ao parque, onde se pode fazer um passeio agradável, por entre árvores e estatuas. 

You can walk around on the fort and extend the walk over to the park nearby, enjoying all the green and some nice statues.

Este é um bom passeio para fugir às zonas mais turísticas e apreciar uma boa vista sobre a cidade e sobre o rio. Fica apenas a uns 10 minutos do centro, se usarmos o metro, e ainda assim dá aquela sensação de distância da cidade. Recomendo!

This a nice and enjoyable trip, if you want to escape the usual crowds of tourists in the city, and enjoy a nice view over the city and the river. It takes only about 10 minutes using the metro, but it still gives you a feeling a being far away from the center. I strongly recommend this region!

Too late for Christmas? Demasiado tarde para ser Natal?

I found some pictures from last Christmas lost in my computer. I was wondering whether I should publish them or not and I decided to do so. Do you need reasons? Here they go...

1. There's a portuguese saying that goes "Christmas is when Men wants". I want today.

2. If you want pictures from this season instead, just imagine all the trees with Easter eggs instead of Christmas decorations. It looked exactly like that the week before Easter.

3. Australia celebrates Christmas in July and we are almost there.

4. How nice wouldn't it be to dream a little bit about Christmas and all its joy right now?

5. The pictures are too nice to not be posted and next Christmas I'll probably take a bunch more.

And finally...

6. Is never too late to celebrate Christmas!

In December a lot of Christmas markets pop up all over the city, some more touristic than others. The biggest is probably the one in the Old Town Square, where the pictures were taken. There were stands with food, souvenirs, handicraft items, and of course... beer. In the center of the square was a huge tree and the whole place was lighten up with Christmas lights.

There was another smaller but equally popular market at the bottom of Vaclav's square. There was also a nicely decorated tree and all the shops around were full of lights.

It was all very Christmasy, and it felt great to drink some hot wine while enjoying a walk through the markets. Prague is a beautiful city to visit around Christmas!

Encontrei perdidas no meu computador umas fotos do Natal passado. Durante uns instantes pensei se as deveria ou não publicar aqui e decidi faze-lo. Querem razões? Aqui vão algumas...

1. O Natal é quando um Homem quer. Eu quero hoje.

2. Se preferirem fotos mais adequadas à época é só imaginar as mesmas árvores mas decoradas com ovos de Páscoa. A mesma praça estava igualzinha na semana antes da Páscoa. 

3. Na Austrália festeja-se o Natal também em Julho e estamos quase lá.

4. Não seria óptimo sonhar com o Natal e com toda a alegria que envolve essa época, agora mesmo?

5. As fotos são demasiado bonitas para não serem postadas e no próximo Natal vou com certeza tirar mais.

E finalmente...

6. Nunca é demasiado tarde para se festejar o Natal!

Em Dezembro a cidade enche-se de mercados de Natal, uns mais turisticos que outros. O maior é provavelmente o da Praça principal (Old Town Square), onde as fotos foram tiradas. Havia barraquinhas com comida, lembranças, artesanato e claro... cerveja. No centro da praça havia uma árvore de Natal enorme e havia luzes de Natal em todo o lado. 

Havia outro mercado um pouco mais pequeno na Praça Venceslau (Vaclav's square). Claro que também não faltava a árvore de Natal e todas as lojas em volta estavam bem iluminadas com luzes de Natal. 

O espírito do Natal andava no ar e foi óptimo dar um passeio por entre os mercados enquanto se bebericava vinho quente. Praga é uma cidade fantástica para se visitar no Natal!

Sportissimo Half Marathon - Prague

I made it!!

It was a fantastic day and I had a lot of fun! The day was perfect for a race: cloudy and warm but not too much. The atmosphere was really good and we started to the sound of classical music (only in Prague!). All over the course there were 18 music points, with live bands or DJ's. As a real beginner I made that one mistake that every person that did it before told me not to... I got so much enthusiasm that I started too strong. I made a brilliant race until kilometer 14, but then there were 7 more... It was also unfortunate that the course between 15 and 19km was really boring and almost empty. In such beautiful city, it didn't feel good to run just among high semi-modern buildings. It affected me mentally. I got so tired that my legs didn't want to go anymore. I had to walk. I did it a few times, always shortly and looking over my shoulder to see if the pacers were coming. There was no way I was failing my goal! And I didn't. I made it under 2h! My goals were to finish it, to have fun, and to make it under 2h, and I made them all!! My secret goal was to make it under 1h55, but that was me dreaming. Maybe next year.

Congratulations to LaLaLane!! You were the only one that dared to guess a time. Even if you missed for a bit, I'll send you something just for your participation ;)

Prague Half Marathon, 1h58m57s

Consegui!!

Ontem foi um dia fantástico e diverti-me imenso! O dia estava perfeito para correr: nublado e temperatura amena. O ambiente estava mesmo bom e começamos a correr ao som de música classica (só mesmo em Praga!). Espalhados pelo percurso havia 18 pontos de musica, com bandas ao vivo ou DJ's. Como principiante que sou, cometi um erro que todas as pessoas que já o fizeram me disseram para não o fazer... Deixei-me levar e comecei demasiado rápido. Fiz uma corrida fantastica até ao quilometro 14, mas ainda havia mais 7... Também foi uma pena a pior parte do percurso coincidir com a parte mais dificil desta distância, entre os quilometros 15 e 19. Numa cidade tão bonita como Praga foi uma pena termos de correr a pior parte em ruas vazias e no meio de edifícios altos e sem graça. Isso afectou-me mentalmente e fiquei tão cansada que tive de andar. Fi-lo umas 2 ou 3 vezes, sempre por apenas uns segundos e a olhar por cima do ombro, para ver se os pacers vinham lá. A última coisa que eu queria era falhar o meu objectivo. E não falhei! Completei a corrida em menos de 2h! Os meus objectivos eram conseguir acabar, divertir-me e correr em menos de 2h. Missão cumprida!! O meu objectivo secreto era chegar antes de 1h55, mas aí já era eu a sonhar. Quem sabe no próximo ano.

Prague Half Marathon / Meia Maratona de Praga

In 2 days I'll run my first half marathon!! Any guesses on the time? The closest guess gets a gift from me, no matter which part of the world you live in.

I can tell you the course is flat, the weather is supposed to be sunny with temperatures around 20ºC (68 F), and there will be about 12.500 people running.

Daqui a 2 dias vou correr a minha primeira meia maratona!! Querem adivinhar o tempo? Quem acertar ganha um presente meu, independentemente do lugar no mundo onde mora.

Aqui vão algumas pistas: o percurso é completamente plano, a previsão do tempo diz que vais estar sol, com temperaturas pelos 20ºC. Vão correr cerca de 12.500 pessoas.

Kirchberg in Tirol - Austria

A couple of weeks ago I attended a conference in Kirchberg in Tirol. It was the third time I went there, and as always it was a great conference. The schedule is very interesting, as we have lectures in the morning and in the evening, but the afternoons are free. Usually, the free time is spent skiing in the mountains. Kirchberg is a village in the middle of the Alpes, and the slopes are absolutely amazing.

Há duas semanas atrás fui a uma conferência em Kirchberg in Tirol. Foi a terceira vez que fui e como sempre foi fantástico. O programa é organizado de forma a que os seminários sejam de manha e à noite,  mas com as tardes livres. Geralmente, o tempo livre é passado a esquiar nas montanhas. Kirchberg é uma vila no meio dos Alpes, e as pistas de ski são absolutamente fantásticas.

This year the winter has been quite odd, because it has been too warm, and there was almost no snow in Kirchberg. I remember once seeing the village completely white surrounded by snowy mountains, but this year I saw it wearing green colours with some white on top of the highest peaks. On top of the mountains it was still possible to ski, but the snow was not very good. As a ski beginner I had a really hard time trying to go down the slopes. I only tried one afternoon and after that I hiked and ran in the green mountains overlooking the snowy ones. I had a great time and I took some really nice pictures. The landscape is absolutely breathtaking, and I returned much more inspired and relaxed.

Este ano o Inverno foi meio estranho, porque foi demasiado quente e quase não havia neve nas montanhas de Kirchberg. Lembro-me de ter lá ido antes e encontrar uma vila cheia de neve, rodeada por montanhas branquinhas, mas este ano as cores predominantes eram os verdes, com apenas alguma neve no pico das montanhas. Ainda assim, havia pistas abertas, pois no topo da montanha ainda havia bastante neve. No entanto, sendo principiante a esquiar, a descida foi muito dificil porque a neve não estava nas melhores condições. Acabei por só tentar uma tarde enquanto que nas outras fiz caminhadas e corri. Foi muito bom e tirei muitas fotos. A paisagem é fantástica e voltei ao trabalho mais inspirada e muito mais relaxada.

Kirchberg by night / Kirchberg à noite

The conference ended with a typical tirolean show performed by some funny band that was always drinking beer but had great voices. I don't know if you know tirolean singing, but performed live is really amazing!

A conferência terminou com um espectaculo tirolês, com uma banda muito engraçada, que bebia cerveja em palco, mas cujos elementos tinham vozes espectaculares. Não sei se conhecem os cantares tiroleses, mas ao vivo é ainda mais impressionante.
