Fighting winter blues at a Film Festival - Newbie

A few years ago a friend of mine told me he never watches Holywood movies, but loved those shown at film festivals. At the time I didn't really get his point and even thought that it was a bit eccentric to say something like that. I totally get him now. There are good Holywood movies, don't get me wrong, but there are many more interesting movies outside of it, especially because of the diversity of cultures. 

How did I come to this conclusion? I started going to Gothenburg's Film Festival (GFF). The first two years, 2016 and 2017, I watched 4 movies. Last year I watched 8 and this year 11 (it became 10 because I was sick and didn't go to the first one). Yes, I'm addicted. Of course, not all were good, but most of them were. Besides, it helps to fight the winter blues that come after Christmas because the festival is at the end of January. 

I also found out that going to a film festival is more than just going to the movies. Sometimes you get to see and to question the actors and directors. You get to hear their views and stories about the makings of their movies. You get to see how superstars are just like us (Alicja Vikander was cold and went to get a sweater, Mads Mikkelsen is charming as expected and super nice - very important piece of information this parenthesis). You get to learn about cultures and countries whose movies never get to the big cinemas. 

For me, the GFF is also one of the few chances I have to see movies in my own language. That is probably the case of many foreigners living in Sweden and my latest post on the Newbie was written exactly thinking about them.

Há uns anos, um amigo meu disse-me que nunca via filmes de Holywood, mas que adorava filmes exibidos em festivais de cinema. Na época, não entendi muito bem porquê e até pensei que ele era um pouco excêntrico ao dizer algo assim. Hoje em dia percebo totalmente o que ele me disse. Há bons filmes de Holywood, não me interpretem mal, mas há muitos mais filmes interessantes fora, especialmente por causa de toda a diversidade cultural que se encontra.

Como cheguei a esta conclusão? Comecei a ir ao Festival de Cinema de Gotemburgo (GFF). Nos dois primeiros anos, 2016 e 2017, fui a 4 filmes. No ano passado fui a 8 e este ano a 11 (acabei por ir só a 10 porque fiquei doente). Sim, estou viciada. Claro que nem todos foram bons, mas a maioria deles foi. Além disso ajuda a combater a depressão de inverno que assenta em nós depois do Natal, uma vez que o festival é no final de janeiro.

Descobri também que ir a um festival de cinema é muito mais do que ir ao cinema. Às vezes vemos e podemos até questionar os atores e realizadores. Ouvimos as suas ideias e histórias por detrás das filmagens. Vemos como as grandes estrelas são exactamente como nós (a Alicja Vikander estava com frio e foi buscar uma camisola grossa, o Mads Mikkelsen é charmoso como esperado e muito simpático - pedaço de informação muito importante neste parênteses). Aprendemos sobre outras culturas e países cujos filmes nunca chegam aos grandes cinemas.

Para mim, o GFF é também uma das poucas oportunidades que tenho de ver filmes na minha própria língua. Este é provavelmente o caso de muitos estrangeiros que vivem na Suécia e o mais recente artigo no Newbie foi escrito exatamente a pensar neles.
