Family in Sweden - Day 1

They were 4 - my parents, my sister and her boyfriend - and came to Sweden for the first time to spend 10 intensive days. We rented a 7-seat car for the first 3 days, to be able to pick them up from the airport comfortably (they came quite late and were tired), and to show them the best of the region. The first day was a freezing and foggy Saturday, but after an energising breakfast we wrapped ourselves in many layers and headed south of Gotheburg.  

Eram 4 - os meus pais, a minha irmã e o namorado - e vieram à Suécia pela primeira vez, para passar 10 dias intensivos. Alugamos um carro de 7 lugares nos primeiros três dias, para os poder ir buscar confortavelmente ao aeroporto (eles chegaram já tarde e cansados), e aproveitamos para lhes mostrar o melhor da região. O primeiro dia foi um sábado gelado e enevoado, mas depois de um pequeno almoço energizante e várias camadas de roupa vestidas, aí fomos nós para sul.

Our first stop was Tjolöholm, a swedish castle in tudor style built between 1898 and 1904 by James Fredrik and Blanche Dickson, and designed by the architect Lars Israel Wahlman, who also designed the surrounding parkland and Arts and Crafts style garden, that extends almost to the sea. One can visit, eat and even stay at the Castle during certain times of the year. We only visited the property from the outside, but it I do want to go back for a guided tour of the castle. 

A nossa primeira parada foi Tjolöholm, um castelo sueco em estilo tudor construído entre 1898 e 1904, por James Fredrik e Blanche Dickson, e projetado pelo arquitecto Lars Israel Wahlman, que também projetou o parque ao redor e o jardim que se estende quase até mar. Pode visitar-se, comer e até passar a noite no castelo durante certas épocas do ano. Nós apenas visitamos a propriedade do lado de fora, mas eu gostava de voltar para uma visita guiada ao castelo.

There's also a small forest around the castle, where we found some frozen puddles. Yes, it was THAT cold!

Em volta do castelo há uma pequena floresta onde encontramos lagos gelados. Sim, estava MESMO frio!

We continued our journey and went further south to Varberg, a popular holiday town in the summer. Around Gothenburg the coast is rocky, but that changes in Varberg (and further south) where they become more sandy. In the picture below is a spa and bath house on the beach. To be in the sauna for a few minutes and then jump into the cold water is one of the Swedes favourite activities.

Continuámos a nossa jornada para sul e fomos a Varberg, uma cidade popular no verão. Ao redor de Gotemburgo a costa é rochosa, mas muda em Varberg (e continua a sul), onde as praias se tornam mais arenosas. A foto abaixo mostra um spa e casa de banhos na praia. Estar na sauna por alguns minutos e depois saltar para a água fria é uma das atividades favoritas dos suecos.

The sandy beaches are not particularly appealing during the winter and we included the town in our plans because of Varberg's fortress, a notable historical building. It is quite a large fortress and it lacks architectural uniformity, because it was first built as a castle in 1280, but then new parts have been built in successions afterwards. It was originally built in 1287-1300 by Count Jacob Nielsen as protection against Eric VI of Denmark, who had declared him an outlaw after the murder of his father King Eric V of Denmark. He had quite a lot of help from Norway to build this enormous fortification and because of that the county became Norwegian in 1305. The fortress only became Swedish in 1645. Nowadays it hosts a museum, private accommodation and even a small lake monster last seen in 2006. 

As praias de areia não são particularmente atraentes durante o inverno, mas incluímos a cidade nos nossos planos por causa da fortaleza de Varberg, um notável edifício histórico. A fortaleza é grande e não tem uniformidade arquitectónica, porque foi construída como um castelo em 1280, mas depois novas partes foram sendo construídas posteriormente. Originalmente foi construída entre 1287-1300 pelo Conde Jacob Nielsen como proteção contra Eric VI da Dinamarca, que o declarou um fora da lei após o assassinato do seu pai, o rei Eric V da Dinamarca. O conde teve muita ajuda da Noruega para construir esta enorme fortificação e por causa disso o condado tornou-se norueguês em 1305 e só se tornou sueco em 1645. Hoje em dia abriga um museu, algumas casas privadas e até mesmo um pequeno monstro no lago visto pela última vez em 2006.

The museum was closed but we could still enjoy the surroundings and the view over the town.

O museu estava fechado mas ainda assim pudemos apreciar o monumento e a vista sobre a cidade.

After walking around and inside the fortress we walked in the town itself. The picture above was taken in the main square, where they had some stalls selling fruits and vegetables, flowers and fish (white van). 

Depois de andarmos em volta e dentro da fortaleza fomos até à cidade em si. A foto acima foi tirada na praça principal, onde encontramos tendas a vender frutas e vegetais, flores e peixe (carrinha branca).

We finished off the day with a short walk in Kungsbacka, another town closer to Gothenburg. By this time the day was almost over, the temperature was dropping and the atmosphere was really wet. We were quite cold and didn't even take pictures to be able to keep our hands warm. After a short while we returned home, enjoyed warm drinks and rested. Only one day had passed and there was a lot more to come!

Terminamos o dia com uma curta caminhada em Kungsbacka, outra cidade mais perto de Gotemburgo. Nessa altura o dia já estava quase a acabar, a temperatura estava a baixar e a atmosfera estava muito húmida. Estávamos cheios de frio e nem tiramos fotos para as mãos não arrefecerem. Depois disso voltamos para casa, apreciamos bebidas quentes mais do que nunca e descansamos. Afinal tinha passado apenas um dia e havia muito mais à nossa espera!
