Tanum's drawings - Sweden

Tanum is a Swedish municipality located at about 2h north of Gothenburg and most known for its collection of pre-historic drawings. Everywhere on earth, people have carved and painted on rocky hills and in caves. In Tanum, people from the Bronze Age have carved thousands of pictures into the landscape's mountain hills. According to Tanum's museum website, this prehistoric picture treasure is so rich and unique that it's one of the world's collections of cultural heritage on UNESCO's World Heritage List.

Tanum é um município sueco localizado a cerca de 2h a norte de Gotemburgo e é conhecido pela sua coleção de desenhos pré-históricos. Sabe-se que os seres humanos esculpiram e pintaram em rochas e cavernas um pouco por toda o planeta. Em Tanum, pessoas da Idade do Bronze esculpiram milhares de desenhos nas colinas da paisagem. De acordo com o site do museu de Tanum, este tesouro de imagens pré-históricas é tão rico e único que é uma das coleções do mundo que é Património Mundial da UNESCO.

We drove to Tanum and right off the exit of the highway we were welcomed with a nice lookout point overlooking the green fields of the region. 

Fomos de carro até Tanum e na saída da autoestrada fomos logo recebidos com um miradouro com vista para os campos verdes da região.

At the Tanum Museum - these are the four locations where visitors can see and learn more about the pre-historic drawings. There are many more drawings spread all over the region and probably many still to be discovered.

No Museu de Tanum - estes são os quatro locais onde os visitantes podem ver e aprender mais sobre os desenhos pré-históricos. Há muitos outros desenhos espalhados por toda a região e, provavelmente, muitos ainda por serem descobertos.

The drawings represent scenes of daily life, like a wedding, fights, hunting, animals, boats and others.  The boats or ships are the most common item found in the drawings. They can have different shapes and sizes and are connected both to travels and to religious events, representing a trip to the other side. 

Os desenhos representam cenas da vida quotidiana, como um casamento, lutas, caça, animais, barcos, entre outros. Os barcos ou navios são o item mais comum encontrado nos desenhos. Podem ter diferentes formas e tamanhos e estão ligados tanto a viagens como a eventos religiosos, representando uma viagem para o outro lado.

The locations are not all that close to each other and the best is to have a car and drive around (or start early and walk around the whole day). Maps and other useful information can be found at Tanum's museum, as well as a cafe. In each location, we found signs explaining the drawings in general and some of the depicted items in more detail.  

Os locais não são assim tão próximos uns dos outros e o melhor é ir de carro de uns para os outros (ou começar cedo e caminhar o dia todo). Mapas e outras informações úteis podem ser encontradas no museu de Tanum, que tem também um café para quando o cansaço apertar. Em cada local, encontramos placas com explicações sobre os desenhos em geral e detalhes para alguns dos itens representados.

The drawings are not naturally red, but they are painted to become more visible to visitors and researchers. We found also some painted in white and some au naturel. The decision of painting them is not unanimous, as some people claim the paint accelerates the erosion process. Others claim that if they are not painted, they are not appreciated because one can barely see them. That is, in fact, true. The large picture below shows a rock full of drawings without paint, which are barely noticeable. 

Os desenhos não são naturalmente vermelhos, mas são pintados para se tornarem mais visíveis para os visitantes e pesquisadores. Encontramos também alguns pintados de branco e alguns ao natural. A decisão de pintá-los não é unanime, já que há quem afirme que a tinta acelera o processo de erosão. Outros no entanto, dizem que se não foram pintados, também não são apreciados porque mal se vêm. Isso é de facto verdade. A foto grande em baixo mostra uma rocha cheia de desenhos ao natural, quase imperceptíveis.

Last but not least, there's also a replica of a village from the Bronze age, where visitors could have a better idea about daily life at that time. Humans were definitely more resistant then. Can you imagine spending a winter in one of those huts? In Sweden?

Por último, mas não menos interessante, há também uma réplica de uma aldeia da idade do bronze, onde os visitantes podem ter uma ideia melhor sobre a vida quotidiana dessa altura. O ser humano era de certeza mais resistente nessa altura. Já imaginaram passar um inverno numa destas cabanas? Na Suécia?

Fighting winter blues at a Film Festival - Newbie

A few years ago a friend of mine told me he never watches Holywood movies, but loved those shown at film festivals. At the time I didn't really get his point and even thought that it was a bit eccentric to say something like that. I totally get him now. There are good Holywood movies, don't get me wrong, but there are many more interesting movies outside of it, especially because of the diversity of cultures. 

How did I come to this conclusion? I started going to Gothenburg's Film Festival (GFF). The first two years, 2016 and 2017, I watched 4 movies. Last year I watched 8 and this year 11 (it became 10 because I was sick and didn't go to the first one). Yes, I'm addicted. Of course, not all were good, but most of them were. Besides, it helps to fight the winter blues that come after Christmas because the festival is at the end of January. 

I also found out that going to a film festival is more than just going to the movies. Sometimes you get to see and to question the actors and directors. You get to hear their views and stories about the makings of their movies. You get to see how superstars are just like us (Alicja Vikander was cold and went to get a sweater, Mads Mikkelsen is charming as expected and super nice - very important piece of information this parenthesis). You get to learn about cultures and countries whose movies never get to the big cinemas. 

For me, the GFF is also one of the few chances I have to see movies in my own language. That is probably the case of many foreigners living in Sweden and my latest post on the Newbie was written exactly thinking about them.

My favourite movies in the GFF this year were "Arctic" of Joe Penna, and "Woman at War" of  Benedikt Erlingsson.

Aalborg (Day 5 - no cycling)

Aalborg is the biggest city we visited in this cycling tour (fourth biggest in Denmark), and it was only fair to spend a whole day exploring it. It was not an entirely no-bike day, as the city is quite large and we cycled to get to places faster, but we didn't have our bags around, which was a huge difference. Aalborg, and cities in Denmark are, in general, very well prepared with good cycling paths, signs and warnings. The ground is also colour coded in the crossings and it's easy to understand if the cyclist has or not priority: blue ground - priority, red ground - no priority.

Aalborg é a maior cidade que visitamos nesta excursão de bicicleta (é a quarta maior da Dinamarca), e por isso passamos um dia inteiro a explora-la. Não foi um dia totalmente sem bicicleta, porque como a cidade é bastante grande pedalamos para chegar a odo o lado mais rápido, mas andamos sem os sacos de viagem, o que foi uma diferença enorme. Aalborg, e as cidades da Dinamarca no geral são bem preparadas para ciclistas, com boas ciclovias, semáforos e avisos. O chão também é pintado nos cruzamentos e fácilmente entendemos se temos ou não prioridade: azul - prioridade, vermelho - sem prioridade.

 Nice entrance to a random (and quite boring) park / Uma entrada diferente para um parque qualquer.

Culture house build in an old factory. It has different rooms, a cafe, exhibitions and a giant sandpit for children. 

Casa da cultura construida numa antiga fábrica. Tem várias salas, um café, exposições e uma caixa de areia gigante para crianças.

Lindholm Høje, a burial ground containing settlements from the Germanic Iron age (6th century) and the Viking age (9th to 11th century). People settle there due to the great location near Limfjord (a fiord) and because it was possible to cross it. Each group of stones is a grave and they can be distinguish by gender: women's graves were circular or oval and men's graves were triangular or in the shape of a boat. Vikings were great explorers and loved boats, so it makes sense. 

Lindholm Høje, um cemitério contendo restos da Idade do Ferro Germânico (século VI) e da era Viking (do século IX ao XI). As pessoas terão se estabelecido aqui devido à óptima localização perto de Limfjord (um fiorde) e também porque era possível atravessá-lo. Cada grupo de pedras é uma sepultura e elas podem ser distinguidas por genero: sepulturas de mulheres são circulares ou ovais e sepulturas de homens são triangulares ou em forma de barco. Os vikings eram grandes exploradores e adoravam barcos, pelo que faz sentido.

We took also the chance to try the "viking's beer", in the cafe of the museum. The beer is produced according to old recipes from the viking times. 

Também aproveitamos para experimentar a "cerveja de viking", no café do museu. A cerveja é produzida de acordo com receitas ancestrais dos tempos dos vikings.

Kunsten, the modern art museum of Aalborg / Kunsten, o museu de arte moderna de Aalborg

Besides the permanent exhibition, there was a great temporary exhibition at Kunsten with recycled materials (a lot was from Kaarina Kaikkonens, but I'm not sure if it was all hers). It was very interesting to see how old stuff can come to life in a whole new way. The picture above shows a wall full of old clothes (left top), a wall full of toiletries (top right) and a bunch of shirts (bottom left). I thought they were quite creative. The paintings (bottom right) are a part of the permanent exhibition. 

Além da exposição permanente estava uma grande exposição temporária com materiais reciclados (muita coisa era de Kaarina Kaikkonens, mas não tenho certeza se era tudo dela). Foi muito interessante ver como coisas antigas podem ganhar vida de uma maneira totalmente diferente. A foto acima mostra uma parede cheia de roupas velhas (em cima à esquerda), uma parede cheia de produtos de higiene pessoal (em cima à direita) e um monte de camisas (em baixo à esquerda). Achei muito criativo. As pinturas (em baixo à direita) fazem parte da exposição permanente.

The most interesting installtion we saw was called My Outline (pictures above), also from Kaarina Kaikkonens. Can you guess what it was made of? It was made of.... Toilet paper! The fragility of the toilet paper represents the fragility of life and how everything can so easily disappear. It was very creative and well made. (sorry if I sound like an art critic... I'm not, it's really how I felt about it)

A instalação mais interessante que vimos chamava-se My Outline (fotos acima), também de Kaarina Kaikkonens. Conseguem adivinhar de que era feito? Era feito de .... Papel higienico! A fragilidade do papel higienico representa a fragilidade da vida e de como tudo pode desaparecer tão facilmente. É uma peça muito criativa e bem feita. (desculpem se pareço um crítico de arte... não sou, foi mesmo o que senti quando lá estava)

Some more pieces I liked. The first one (top left) represents the three modern habits: nudity, fitness and consumerism (I'm citing this from my head because I couldn't find information). I thought it was very fitting to the times we are living now. 

Mais algumas peças que eu gostei. O primeiro (superior esquerdo) representa três modas modernas: nudez, fitness e consumismo (estou a dizer de cabeça porque não encontrei mais informação). Achei que estava muito apropriado para os tempos de hoje.

Eleven less one of  Michelangelo Pistoletto

This was an instalation done at the museum. It~s hard to explain but the perspective of the room changes as we move inside, getting different angles from the different mirrors. Such simple idea, with such a great result!

Esta instalação foi feita no museu. É difícil explicar, mas a perspectiva da sala muda à medida que nos movemos lá dentro e vemos através de ângulos diferentes obtidos dos diferentes espelhos. A idéia é tão simples e o resultado é tão bom!

After a morning full of history and of art we were quite hungry and headed to the local food market, in Bådehavn (one of the marinas). It was full of good options for all tastes. We went middle-eastern because they looked delicious and we love a good freshly made falafel.

Depois de uma manhã histórica e recheada de arte estávamos cheios de fome e fomos até ao mercado em Bådehavn (uma das marinas) para almoçar. Havia opções para todos os gostos. Nós escolhemos pratos do médio oriente porque tinham muito bom aspecto e adoramos um bom falafel feito na hora.

After lunch we dropped the bikes and explored the center on foot. The center has a lot of nice buildings, some older, some modern, but all with that architectural touch that reminds us that we are in Denmark.

Depois do almoço largamos as bicicletas e exploramos o centro a pé. O centro tem edificios engraçados, uns mais antigos, outros mais modernos, mas todos com aquele toque arquitectónico que nos lembra que estamos na Dinamarca. 

The photo on the top right shows the university, which I thought was a quite nice building. We saw one of the lecture rooms that had view over the water. Quite inspirational! On the bottom left picture we have someone cycling with not one but two instruments. That's brave!

A foto no canto superior direito mostra a universidade, que era num edifício bem giro. Vimos um dos anfiteatros que tinha vista sobre o rio. Muito inspirador! No canto inferior esquerdo, temos um ciclista a pedalar não com apenas um, mas com dois instrumentos. Isso é que é corajoso!

And that's how we spent our day in Aalborg.
E foi assim que passamos um dia inteiro em Aalborg. 

Athens - Greece

Greece is a country of contrasts and its capital city Athens does not reflect the entire country. It is well known for its beautiful islands, in which the sun kisses the sea during beautiful sunsets and life slows down to a more relaxed pace. 

Athens, on the other hand, it's crowded, noisy and seems to never stop. Its streets breathe history and each wall has witnessed countless remarkable events. 

A lot has been written about Athens and I could write myself several posts about my trip, but I'll keep it simple and show you the highlights. Johan had a conference there and I joined him for a long weekend. It was much warmer than Sweden and it was nice to get away from the routines of work and school. 

A Grécia é um país de extremos e a sua capital Atenas não reflete todo o país. A Grécia é bem conhecida pelas ilhas encantadoras, em que o sol beija o mar durante o pôr-do-sol inesquecível e a velocidade de vida desacelera para um ritmo mais relaxado.

Atenas, por outro lado, é cheia de gente, barulhenta e dá a sensação de nunca parar. As ruas respiram história e cada parede testemunhou inúmeros eventos notáveis.

Muita coisa foi já escrita sobre Atenas e eu própria poderia escrever vários posts sobre a minha viagem. Em vez disso escolhi fazer um post mais simples com os destaques. O Johan teve uma conferência em Atenas e eu fui ter com ele fazendo um fim de semana alargado. Estava mais quente do que na Suécia e foi bom sair das rotinas do trabalho e da escola.

A taste of the islands in Athens, a corner we only found because we were listening to Rick Steve's podcast of Athens.

Um pedaço das ilhas em Atenas, um canto que só encontramos porque ouvimos o podcast de Rick Steve sobre Atenas.

These are really just the highlights because we walked around everywhere and visited everything, always listening to our private guide Rick Steve (obviously joking... we had his podcasts, which are very good!).  If you have never been you should really do it. If not for the history do it for the wonderful food and the frozen greek yoghurt.

Estes são realmente apenas os destaques porque andamos por todos o lado e visitamos tudo, sempre acompanhados pelo nosso guia privado Rick Steve (obviamente estou a brincar... ouvimos os seus podcasts, que são muito bons!).
