Alingsås

A few days after we returned from our cycling tour in Denmark we wanted more and decided to do a one-day cycling trip nearby. We took our bikes on the train and headed to Alingsås, the fika capital of Sweden (fika = coffee/tea with something sweet) and then cycled back. Alingsås is a beautiful town,  full of green areas and surrounded by water, as it is located near two lakes, Mjörn and Gerdsken, and crossed by the river Save.

Poucos dias depois de voltarmos das férias na Dinamarca, queríamos mais pedaladas e decidimos fazer uma viagem de bicicleta de um dia aqui perto. Fomos de comboio com as bicicletas até Alingsås, a capital de fika da Suécia (fika = café/chá com doces) e depois voltamos de bicicleta. Alingsås é uma pequena cidade cheia de espaços verdes e cercada por água, uma vez que está localizada perto de dois lagos, Mjörn e Gerdsken, e é atravessada pelo rio Save.

To top it up we found this quirky Chinese restaurant, surrounded by forest and in the middle of nowhere. That was the last picture I took, so it became a special end to an interesting day spent exploring more of my surroundings.

Aalborg - Fredrikshamn (Day 6)

The sixth day was also the last day of our trip to the north of Denmark. We cycled from Aalborg back to Fredrikshamn and then took the ferry back to Gothenburg. Our ferry tickets were not until 20:00, so we had plenty of time to cycle back to the port. We planned on taking the straight road this time (64 km) and although we didn't expect to see so much on the way, we left at 11:00 from Aalborg, which gave us plenty of time. Or did it? 

O sexto dia também foi o último dia da nossa viagem ao norte da Dinamarca. Pedalamos de Aalborg para Fredrikshamn e daí apanhamos o ferry de volta a Gotemburgo. Tínhamos bilhetes de ferry para as 20:00, e tínhamos por isso bastante tempo para voltar ao porto. Planeamos ir pela estrada mais direta desta vez (64 kms) e embora não esperamos ver muito pelo caminho, partimos às 11:00 de Aalborg, o que nos deu bastante tempo. Ou será que não deu?

It started all very well, with beautiful fields of cereal, green meadows with slow-paced cows and unexpected castles on the way. 

Tudo começou muito bem, com belos campos de cereais, prados verdes com vacas em ritmo lento e castelos inesperados no caminho.

Dronninglund Castle / Castelo de Dronninglund

Dronninglund castle was very beautiful and kind of just popped up on the road. It was constructed in the 12th century and it started as a monastery. In 1690 it was bought by Queen Charlotte Amalie and was renamed Dronninglund (it means queen-grove). Nowadays, it is used as a conference and event hotel. 

I saw a sign for toilet and followed it. I had to cross a bit of the graveyard, go into the church, go up some very narrow and dark stairs, to finally find the toilet on the first floor of the church. 

O castelo de Dronninglund era muito bonito e apareceu quase do nada no nosso caminho. Foi construído no século XII e começou por ser um mosteiro. Em 1690 foi comprado pela rainha Charlotte Amalie e renomeado Dronninglund (significa rainha-bosque). Hoje em dia é usado como um hotel de conferências e eventos.

Quando estava lá vi um sinal para a casa de banho e segui-o. Tive que atravessar um pedaço do cemitério, entrar na igreja, subir umas escadas muito estreitas e escuras, para finalmente encontrar a casa de banho, que ficava no primeiro andar da igreja.

Denmark has a lot of bicycle paths and it was always easy to follow them, as each path had a number and sometimes even the destination city(ies). However, the path we were following the last day took us through some gravel paths, which was not as nice. At first, they were quite broad and hard, so it was easy to ride even though we did it slower. Still, every time we came to a crossing with a road we checked the maps and chose the road when possible. 

A Dinamarca tem muitas ciclovias e foi sempre fácil segui-las, pois cada caminho tinha um número e às vezes até a(s) cidade(s) de destino. No entanto, o caminho que seguimos no último dia levou-nos por caminhos de terra e gravilha, que não eram tão bons. No começo eram bastante largos e pisados, pelo que era fácil pedalar na mesma, ainda que mais devagar. Ainda assim, de cada vez que chegávamos a um cruzamento com uma estrada víamos no mapa se dava para seguir antes pela estrada.

That's how we found ourselves in the beautiful and peaceful village of Dorf Kikerby, its animals and windmill. We felt so lucky because the landscape was really beautiful. 

Foi assim que demos connosco na bela e pacífica aldeia de Dorf Kikerby, com os seus animais e moinho. Sentímo-nos mesmo sortudos por estar ali a ver aquela paisagem.

After a while, we found another cycling path that according to the map would be a good shortcut. Wrong decision! That path took us through some forest and the trail was so sandy that we had to walk for a while. We kept going thinking it would become better ahead and we alternated between riding carefully and walking with the bikes. It took ages to do one kilometer and we both, dirty and sweaty, decided that we were taking the road at the next crossing, even if it was a larger road without bicycle paths. 

Um pouco depois, encontramos outra ciclovia que de acordo com o mapa seria um bom atalho. Decisão errada! Esse caminho levou-nos através de alguma floresta e por um trilho tão arenoso que tivemos que andar durante um bocado. Continuamos, a pensar que melhoraria mais à frente e íamos alternando entre pedalar com cuidado e andar. Demoramos séculos a fazer um quilômetro e já estavamos os dois sujos e suados quando decidimos que íamos definitivamente pela estrada no cruzamento seguinte, mesmo que fosse uma estrada maior sem ciclovias.

And that's when it happened... Johan got a flat tire! Of course, it had to happen the last day, the only day we had a time deadline. His bicycle is quite new and it would be the first time he would change the tire. Fortunately, we had been smart enough to take with us an extra tire, and we didn't have to fix the hole (it would have been tricky without water nearby). We got nervous, of course, but we knew we had time to spare. It all went well and Johan was a real champion and changed the tire in 15 minutes! When we got back on our bicycles and rode again, we found out that the asphalt road was a mere 300m from where we got the flat tire. So close. 

E foi aí que aconteceu... o Johan teve um furo no pneu! Claro que tinha que acontecer no último dia, o único dia em que tinhamos hora para chegar. A bicicleta dele é nova e nunca lhe tinha mudado o pneu, mas felizmente fomos espertos o suficiente para levar uma câmara de ar extra, e assim não precisávamos de remender o buraco (teria sido complicado sem água por perto). Ficamos nervosos claro, mas sabíamos que tínhamos tempo de sobra. Tudo correu bem e o Johan foi um verdadeiro campeão e mudou o pneu em 15 minutos! Quando voltamos às nossas bicicletas e voltamos a pedalar, descobrimos que a estrada de asfalto ficava a uns meros 300 metros de onde o pneu furou. Tão perto.

After that we just rode, stopping only in a small supermarket to buy snacks. It was very windy and there was a lot of up and down (wasn't Denmark supposed to be flat???), so our legs were already complaining. Eighty kilometres after we left Aalborg we arrived in Frederikshavn, an hour and a half before the ferry departure and we could finally relax. We had booked a buffet dinner on the ferry so we celebrated our tough but successful day with a beer, in one of the cafes nearby the port. This was also funny because I ordered beers and the waiter showed me these plastic glasses from behind the counter, asking if that size was ok. I thought they were 500ml, so I ordered two. It turned out they were 750ml!! 

Depois disso foi só andar, parando apenas num pequeno supermercado para comprar comida. Havia muito vento e muitas subidas e descidas (mas a Dinamarca não era muito plana???) e as nossas pernas já se queixavam muito.  Oitenta quilómetros depois chegamos a Frederikshavn, uma hora e meia antes da partida do ferry e pudemos finalmente relaxar. Tínhamos marcado jantar de bufê no ferry e celebramos o nosso dia duro mas bem sucedido com uma cerveja num dos cafés perto do porto. Isso também foi engraçado porque eu pedi cervejas e o empregado de mesa mostrou-me estes copos de plástico por trás do balcão, perguntando se era este o tamanho. Eu pensei que eram de 500ml e pedi dois. Afinal eram de 750ml!!

We then headed to the ferry, now dirty, sweat and also drunk (just joking) and could finally enjoy a meal. The buffet was great, with a lot of seafood and other Scandinavian delicacies, a table of cheese and desserts. They even had a soft-ice cream machine! 

Seguimos depois para o ferry, agora sujos, suados e também bêbedos (estou a brincar) e pudemos então comer uma refeição como deve ser. O buffet era óptimo, com marisco e outras delícias escandinavas, mesa de queijos e sobremesas. Até havia uma máquina de gelados!

And that's how we ended a memorable trip, full of adventures and new experiences. We rode in total about 300 km in 4 cycling days and it felt great. We want to absolutely do it again! 

E foi assim que terminamos uma viagem memorável, cheia de aventuras e novas experiências. Pedalamos no total cerca de 300 kms em 4 dias e foi espectacular. Vamos com certeza repetir!

Aalborg (Day 5 - no cycling)

Aalborg is the biggest city we visited in this cycling tour (fourth biggest in Denmark), and it was only fair to spend a whole day exploring it. It was not an entirely no-bike day, as the city is quite large and we cycled to get to places faster, but we didn't have our bags around, which was a huge difference. Aalborg, and cities in Denmark are, in general, very well prepared with good cycling paths, signs and warnings. The ground is also colour coded in the crossings and it's easy to understand if the cyclist has or not priority: blue ground - priority, red ground - no priority.

Aalborg é a maior cidade que visitamos nesta excursão de bicicleta (é a quarta maior da Dinamarca), e por isso passamos um dia inteiro a explora-la. Não foi um dia totalmente sem bicicleta, porque como a cidade é bastante grande pedalamos para chegar a odo o lado mais rápido, mas andamos sem os sacos de viagem, o que foi uma diferença enorme. Aalborg, e as cidades da Dinamarca no geral são bem preparadas para ciclistas, com boas ciclovias, semáforos e avisos. O chão também é pintado nos cruzamentos e fácilmente entendemos se temos ou não prioridade: azul - prioridade, vermelho - sem prioridade.

Voltando a Aalborg, aqui fica o que vimos.

 Nice entrance to a random (and quite boring) park / Uma entrada diferente para um parque qualquer.

Culture house build in an old factory. It has different rooms, a cafe, exhibitions and a giant sandpit for children. 

Casa da cultura construida numa antiga fábrica. Tem várias salas, um café, exposições e uma caixa de areia gigante para crianças.

Lindholm Høje, a burial ground containing settlements from the Germanic Iron age (6th century) and the Viking age (9th to 11th century). People settle there due to the great location near Limfjord (a fiord) and because it was possible to cross it. Each group of stones is a grave and they can be distinguish by gender: women's graves were circular or oval and men's graves were triangular or in the shape of a boat. Vikings were great explorers and loved boats, so it makes sense. 

Lindholm Høje, um cemitério contendo restos da Idade do Ferro Germânico (século VI) e da era Viking (do século IX ao XI). As pessoas terão se estabelecido aqui devido à óptima localização perto de Limfjord (um fiorde) e também porque era possível atravessá-lo. Cada grupo de pedras é uma sepultura e elas podem ser distinguidas por genero: sepulturas de mulheres são circulares ou ovais e sepulturas de homens são triangulares ou em forma de barco. Os vikings eram grandes exploradores e adoravam barcos, pelo que faz sentido.

We took also the chance to try the "viking's beer", in the cafe of the museum. The beer is produced according to old recipes from the viking times. 

Também aproveitamos para experimentar a "cerveja de viking", no café do museu. A cerveja é produzida de acordo com receitas ancestrais dos tempos dos vikings.

Kunsten, the modern art museum of Aalborg / Kunsten, o museu de arte moderna de Aalborg

Besides the permanent exhibition, there was a great temporary exhibition at Kunsten with recycled materials (a lot was from Kaarina Kaikkonens, but I'm not sure if it was all hers). It was very interesting to see how old stuff can come to life in a whole new way. The picture above shows a wall full of old clothes (left top), a wall full of toiletries (top right) and a bunch of shirts (bottom left). I thought they were quite creative. The paintings (bottom right) are a part of the permanent exhibition. 

Além da exposição permanente estava uma grande exposição temporária com materiais reciclados (muita coisa era de Kaarina Kaikkonens, mas não tenho certeza se era tudo dela). Foi muito interessante ver como coisas antigas podem ganhar vida de uma maneira totalmente diferente. A foto acima mostra uma parede cheia de roupas velhas (em cima à esquerda), uma parede cheia de produtos de higiene pessoal (em cima à direita) e um monte de camisas (em baixo à esquerda). Achei muito criativo. As pinturas (em baixo à direita) fazem parte da exposição permanente.

The most interesting installtion we saw was called My Outline (pictures above), also from Kaarina Kaikkonens. Can you guess what it was made of? It was made of.... Toilet paper! The fragility of the toilet paper represents the fragility of life and how everything can so easily disappear. It was very creative and well made. (sorry if I sound like an art critic... I'm not, it's really how I felt about it)

A instalação mais interessante que vimos chamava-se My Outline (fotos acima), também de Kaarina Kaikkonens. Conseguem adivinhar de que era feito? Era feito de .... Papel higienico! A fragilidade do papel higienico representa a fragilidade da vida e de como tudo pode desaparecer tão facilmente. É uma peça muito criativa e bem feita. (desculpem se pareço um crítico de arte... não sou, foi mesmo o que senti quando lá estava)

Some more pieces I liked. The first one (top left) represents the three modern habits: nudity, fitness and consumerism (I'm citing this from my head because I couldn't find information). I thought it was very fitting to the times we are living now. 

Mais algumas peças que eu gostei. O primeiro (superior esquerdo) representa três modas modernas: nudez, fitness e consumismo (estou a dizer de cabeça porque não encontrei mais informação). Achei que estava muito apropriado para os tempos de hoje.

Eleven less one of  Michelangelo Pistoletto

This was an instalation done at the museum. It~s hard to explain but the perspective of the room changes as we move inside, getting different angles from the different mirrors. Such simple idea, with such a great result!

Esta instalação foi feita no museu. É difícil explicar, mas a perspectiva da sala muda à medida que nos movemos lá dentro e vemos através de ângulos diferentes obtidos dos diferentes espelhos. A idéia é tão simples e o resultado é tão bom!

After a morning full of history and of art we were quite hungry and headed to the local food market, in Bådehavn (one of the marinas). It was full of good options for all tastes. We went middle-eastern because they looked delicious and we love a good freshly made falafel.

Depois de uma manhã histórica e recheada de arte estávamos cheios de fome e fomos até ao mercado em Bådehavn (uma das marinas) para almoçar. Havia opções para todos os gostos. Nós escolhemos pratos do médio oriente porque tinham muito bom aspecto e adoramos um bom falafel feito na hora.

After lunch we dropped the bikes and explored the center on foot. The center has a lot of nice buildings, some older, some modern, but all with that architectural touch that reminds us that we are in Denmark.

Depois do almoço largamos as bicicletas e exploramos o centro a pé. O centro tem edificios engraçados, uns mais antigos, outros mais modernos, mas todos com aquele toque arquitectónico que nos lembra que estamos na Dinamarca. 

The photo on the top right shows the university, which I thought was a quite nice building. We saw one of the lecture rooms that had view over the water. Quite inspirational! On the bottom left picture we have someone cycling with not one but two instruments. That's brave!

A foto no canto superior direito mostra a universidade, que era num edifício bem giro. Vimos um dos anfiteatros que tinha vista sobre o rio. Muito inspirador! No canto inferior esquerdo, temos um ciclista a pedalar não com apenas um, mas com dois instrumentos. Isso é que é corajoso!

And that's how we spent our day in Aalborg.
E foi assim que passamos um dia inteiro em Aalborg.
