Brussels - Belgium

I have been to Brussels airport numerous times, to change flights to or from Portugal, but until October last year, I had never actually been to the city. That was a shame and had to be rectified! So last year, I and my sister decided to do our yearly sister's trip to Belgium. It was so nice and enjoyable that J. got jealous and a few months later, in January I went back with him just over the weekend (the flights are short and cheap enough to go over for just 2 1/2 days).

In October/November with my sister, the weather was sunny, although quite cold, while in January it was grey and even colder. You will probably notice the difference in the pictures below.

Estive no aeroporto de Bruxelas inúmeras vezes, para mudar de avião para ou de Portugal, mas até Outubro do ano passado nunca tinha estado na cidade. Era uma pena e tinha que ser corrigido! Assim, no final de Outubro eu e minha irmã fizemos a nossa viagem anual à Bélgica. Gostámos tanto que o J. ficou cheio de inveja e voltei lá com ele um fim de semana, em Janeiro. Felizmente os vôos são curtos e baratos o suficiente para ir lá 2 dias e meio.

Em outubro/novembro com minha irmã, o tempo estava ensolarado, apesar de frio, enquanto que em janeiro estava cinzento e ainda mais frio. Consegue-se perceber bem a diferença nas fotos em baixo.

 Atomium, Brussel's Eiffel Tower / Atomium, a torre Eiffel de Bruxelas

Just as the Eiffel Tower, the Atomium was built for a world exhibition taking place in Belgium in 1958. It was designed by the engineer André Waterkeyn and architects André and Jean Polak and it's big! It has nine 18m diameter stainless steel spheres, that are connected, forming thus the chemical structure of a unit cell of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. Five of the spheres are "habitable" and contain exhibition halls, rooms and even a restaurant. The bonds connection the atoms are stairs and escalators. All in all it is a pretty cool landmark!  

Tal como a Torre Eiffel, o Atomium foi construído para uma exposição mundial que houve na Bélgica em 1958. Foi projectado pelo engenheiro André Waterkeyn e pelos arquitectos André e Jean Polak e é grande! Tem nove esferas de aço inoxidável de 18m de diametro cada, ligadas umas às outras, formando assim a estrutura química de uma célula unitária de um cristal de ferro ampliada 165 bilhões de vezes. Cinco das esferas são "habitáveis" e contêm espaços para exposições, salas e até um restaurante. As ligações entre os átomos escadas rolantes. Ou seja, é um monumento super original!

Park van Laken (near the Atomium) - it's a giant park where people go on Sundays to play, for instance, cricket.

Parlamentarium - a place to learn more about the European Parlament (EP). The exhibition is very educative and interactive which makes it fun. Entrance is free.

Parlamentarium - um lugar para aprender mais sobre o Parlamento Europeu (PE). A exposição é muito educativa e interactiva, o que a torna mais divertida. A entrada é grátis.

We saw a lot of murals and street art, not only in Brussels but all over Belgium. The one below, with the Smurfs, covered the entire ceiling of a gallery just outside the train station. It's very well made and creative. In the bit below the Smurfs are buying Belgium fries, which is quite fitting.

Vimos muitos murais e arte de rua, não só em Bruxelas mas em toda a Bélgica. Em baixo, está uma foto de um mural com os Smurfs, que cobria o tecto inteiro de uma galeria mesmo ao lado da estação de comboios. Estava muito bem feito e criativo. Na esta parte os Smurfs estão a comprar as famosas batatas fritas Belgas. 

Speaking about buying, or buying food, if there's something impossible to miss in Belgium is the chocolate. There are so many shops with different kinds of chocolates, truffles, and attractive and artistic windows that is a pleasure for the eye to just go by. And then buy some to taste of course. 

Falando em comprar ou comprar comida, se há coisa impossível de perder na Bélgica é o chocolate. Há tantas lojas com diferentes tipos de chocolates, trufas e montras atraentes e artísticas, que é um prazer para os olhos passear pelas lojas. E depois comprar alguns para provar, claro.

Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert, where Jean Neuhaus, a swiss immigrant, opened his first Neuhaus (chocolatier) shop, in 1857. In 1912, his grandson Jean Neuhaus II invented the chocolate praliné, a decadent chocolate shell with a creamy chocolate ganache center.

Brussels is a great city and don't listen to those who say otherwise. Brussels is also a short train away from many other charming Belgium cities, so even if one runs out of things to do in Brussels, one can always get to know other places in Belgium. That's exactly what we did, not that we ever got bored of Brussels, but we were curious about the other places as well. I'll tell you more about them in the coming posts. 

Bruxelas é uma cidade fantástica e não dêem ouvidos aqueles que dizem o contrário. Bruxelas está também a uma curta viagem de comboio de muitas outras cidades Belgas e charmosas, por isso, se alguém ficar sem coisas para fazer em Bruxelas, pode sempre ir conhecer outros lugares na Bélgica. Foi exactamente isso que fizemos, não que alguma vez nos tivéssemos aborrecido em Bruxelas, mas apenas porque estávamos curiosas sobre os outros sítios.
