Leuven - Belgium

Continuing on my trip to Belgium, which I was telling you about before the summer break, I will take you to Leuven, the capital of the Flemish province. According to wikipedia, Leuven is the oldest university city in the Low Countries and currently holds the KU Leuven, Belgium's largest university, founded in 1835. 

Continuando a viagem à Bélgica, sobre a qual escrevi antes das férias de verão, vou hoje levar-vos até Leuven, a capital da província flamenga. Segundo a wikipedia, Leuven é a cidade universitária mais antiga dos Países Baixos e atualmente abriga a KU Leuven, a maior universidade da Bélgica, fundada em 1835.

J. lived in Leuven during his master's studies and he had never been back since then. It was nice for him to be back and fun for me to hear all his stories. In almost 12 years the city has not changed much, specially in the old city centre. 

O J. viveu em Leuven durante o mestrado e nunca mais lá tinha voltado, pelo que foi engraçado para ele estar de volta e para mim ouvir todas as suas histórias desse tempo. Em quase 12 anos a cidade não mudou muito, especialmente o centro e parte antiga da cidade.

Local market with vegetables, cheese, meat, pies, quiches and so much more for sale. The hardest part was to choose because everything looked delicious. We bought some quiches and ate them in a bench at the Ladeuzeplein (the nice square with the needle in the fly).

Mercado local com legumes, queijos, carne, tartes, quiches e muito mais. A parte mais difícil foi escolher porque tudo parecia delicioso. Compramos duas quiches e comemo-las num banco na praça Ladeuzeplein (a praça com a agulha e a mosca).

Stella Artois brewery

We were in Leuven in January, so the weather was not great. We managed a pleasant morning exploring the streets and the local market, but the afternoon turned out to be rainy. However, that's not a problem in Belgium, as one can try other sides of their culture, such as the beer culture. Belgium is famous for their beer making and there's hundreds of different beers, always served in their specific glass (it's a crime otherwise!). So when the rain started, we did like the locals (there were not that many tourists at the time) and went to the pub. 

Era janeiro quando fomos a Leuven e o tempo não estava fantástico. A manhã esteve agradável e aproveitamos para explorar as ruas e o mercado local, mas a tarde acabou por ser chuvosa. No entanto, isso não é um problema na Bélgica, porque há outros lados da cultura para descobrir, como a cultura da cerveja. A Bélgica é famosa pela produção de cerveja e há centenas de cervejas diferentes, sempre servidas no seu copo próprio (caso contrário é um crime!). Assim quando começou a chover fizemos como os locais (não havia muitos turistas nessa altura) e fomos para o bar.

Leuven is a nice cosy city not far from Brussels (about 40 min. by train), so if you ever find yourself around don't miss it. Even if it's winter and it's raining :)

Leuven é uma cidade acolhedora e agradável, não muito longe de Bruxelas (cerca de 40 minutos de comboio) e se alguma andarem por ali aproveitem e façam uma visita. Mesmo que seja inverno e esteja a chover :)
