Vyšehrad is a fort located here in Prague. It was built on top of a hill, overlooking the Vltava's river and it has an amazing view over the city. It's slightly off the center and a more quite place as there are less tourists that come this far. There is a legend that considers Vyšehrad as the location of the very first settlement, which later became the city of Prague, however, no evidence supports this theory.

Inside the perimeter of the fort is the basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul, which cemetery containing the remains of many famous musicians and other artists of Czech Republic.

You can walk around on the fort and extend the walk over to the park nearby, enjoying all the green and some nice statues.

Recomendo!

This a nice and enjoyable trip, if you want to escape the usual crowds of tourists in the city, and enjoy a nice view over the city and the river. It takes only about 10 minutes using the metro, but it still gives you a feeling a being far away from the center. I strongly recommend this region!

Too late for Christmas? Demasiado tarde para ser Natal?

I found some pictures from last Christmas lost in my computer. I was wondering whether I should publish them or not and I decided to do so. Do you need reasons? Here they go...

1. There's a portuguese saying that goes "Christmas is when Men wants". I want today.
2. If you want pictures from this season instead, just imagine all the trees with Easter eggs instead of Christmas decorations. It looked exactly like that the week before Easter.
3. Australia celebrates Christmas in July and we are almost there.
4. How nice wouldn't it be to dream a little bit about Christmas and all its joy right now?
5. The pictures are too nice to not be posted and next Christmas I'll probably take a bunch more.
And finally...
6. Is never too late to celebrate Christmas!

In December a lot of Christmas markets pop up all over the city, some more touristic than others. The biggest is probably the one in the Old Town Square, where the pictures were taken. There were stands with food, souvenirs, handicraft items, and of course... beer. In the center of the square was a huge tree and the whole place was lighten up with Christmas lights.

There was another smaller but equally popular market at the bottom of Vaclav's square. There was also a nicely decorated tree and all the shops around were full of lights.

It was all very Christmasy, and it felt great to drink some hot wine while enjoying a walk through the markets. Prague is a beautiful city to visit around Christmas!

Encontrei perdidas no meu computador umas fotos do Natal passado.

Sportissimo Half Marathon - Prague

I made it!!

It was a fantastic day and I had a lot of fun! The day was perfect for a race: cloudy and warm but not too much. The atmosphere was really good and we started to the sound of classical music (only in Prague!). All over the course there were 18 music points, with live bands or DJ's. As a real beginner I made that one mistake that every person that did it before told me not to... I got so much enthusiasm that I started too strong. I made a brilliant race until kilometer 14, but then there were 7 more... It was also unfortunate that the course between 15 and 19km was really boring and almost empty. In such beautiful city, it didn't feel good to run just among high semi-modern buildings. It affected me mentally. I got so tired that my legs didn't want to go anymore. I had to walk. I did it a few times, always shortly and looking over my shoulder to see if the pacers were coming. There was no way I was failing my goal! And I didn't. I made it under 2h! My goals were to finish it, to have fun, and to make it under 2h, and I made them all!! My secret goal was to make it under 1h55, but that was me dreaming. Maybe next year.

Congratulations to LaLaLane!! You were the only one that dared to guess a time. Even if you missed for a bit, I'll send you something just for your participation ;)
(Please, send your address to voltasnomundo@hotmail.com).

Consegui!!

Deixei-me levar e comecei demasiado rápido. Quem sabe no próximo ano.

Prague Half Marathon / Meia Maratona de Praga

In 2 days I'll run my first half marathon!! Any guesses on the time? The closest guess gets a gift from me, no matter which part of the world you live in.

I can tell you the course is flat, the weather is supposed to be sunny with temperatures around 20ºC (68 F), and there will be about 12.500 people running.

Good luck :)

Daqui a 2 dias vou correr a minha primeira meia maratona!! Querem adivinhar o tempo?

Boa sorte :)

Kirchberg in Tirol - Austria

A couple of weeks ago I attended a conference in Kirchberg in Tirol. It was the third time I went there, and as always it was a great conference. The schedule is very interesting, as we have lectures in the morning and in the evening, but the afternoons are free. Usually, the free time is spent skiing in the mountains. Kirchberg is a village in the middle of the Alpes, and the slopes are absolutely amazing.

This year the winter has been quite odd, because it has been too warm, and there was almost no snow in Kirchberg. I remember once seeing the village completely white surrounded by snowy mountains, but this year I saw it wearing green colours with some white on top of the highest peaks. On top of the mountains it was still possible to ski, but the snow was not very good. As a ski beginner I had a really hard time trying to go down the slopes. I only tried one afternoon and after that I hiked and ran in the green mountains overlooking the snowy ones. I had a great time and I took some really nice pictures. The landscape is absolutely breathtaking, and I returned much more inspired and relaxed.

The town / A vila

I decided to hike through the green mountains, so I wouldn't get wet and I would have the view of the snowy peaks.

The conference ended with a typical tirolean show performed by some funny band that was always drinking beer but had great voices. I don't know if you know tirolean singing, but performed live is really amazing!

(in english after the image)

There's marathons and there's Marathons! I would rather run 42 km than to have to go through those last 3 days before the conference again.
We can't just go to a conference, we need to present results, and the more innovative the better. Months before we have to submit a summary of our work to the organisers, describing what we will show. Of course, many times we sent something that is not ready yet, but we know we will manage it until the time of the conference. This time I had one of those. Four weeks before the conference there was a small breakthrough in my results, and we figured that our initial theory was wrong. That was ok, we figured it out the right way afterwards, but we would need some more data to prove it. That data would be acquired in a certain machine, that works through a laser. Four weeks before, the electrical source of the laser broke and it was sent to be repaired. Obviously, that took exactly... three weeks and half!!

That left me a few days free in an absolute crazy week!
On monday I felt I was getting a cold, but I went to work anyway.
On tuesday I felt worse and I stayed home to recover.
On Wednesday the laser was finally working an I started a marathon of 30h of measurements! I didn't have to be there all the time, only once every 3 or 4h, but I went there at midnight, 4 a.m., and 8 a.m.
On thursday I had a ton of data to process, select, analyse and interpret. The boss showed up wanting to see the poster where I would show my results. At the time my poster was composed of a colourful background that I had quickly copied from a poster I made 4 years ago. I laugh to avoid crying (a portuguese expression).
On friday I made a race against time to finish everything before 4 p.m., the latest possible time I could print my poster.
All this with a bad cold and constant headaches!

It turned out to be a great poster, possibly one of my best works (how this is possible I will never understand!) and it was quite a success at the conference. I don't know how I made it, but I don't want to do it this way again. Marathons only for running from now on...

I had fun writing this post, mainly because it's in the past and I made it. How about you? Did you enjoy learning more about the glamourous life of a scientist? ;)

I'm back!

After an intense 3-day working marathon, and a week-long conference in Austria... I'm back!
I thought I would have time to post in between lectures, and during breaks, but it was impossible. I'll try to post about my trip soon. I could take some lovely pictures of the Alpes, the snow and the wonderful sunny days.

Here is a picture to entice you!

GöteborgsVarvet Marathon 2021 - I'm in !!

Adivinhem... já me inscrevi!!

Göteborgs Varvet it's the biggest race in the world, with the highest number of participants. Last year 64000 ran it. It happens every year in J.'s hometown, it's a half marathon and I'll run it this year for the first time. In 2021, the city of Göteborg will celebrate 400 years and the race will become a marathon instead. Since it will be a big thing, the organisers decided to open 7000 inscriptions already now. Guess what... I already registered!! I know it's completly crazy, because who knows where will I be in 7 years. But I will also have 7 years to built it in me, to dream about it, and that's one of my favourite parts, both of traveling and running.

Therefore, Göteborg marathon here I go!!!

(Ok, I promise to not write about running in the next 5 posts! Even I am tired of myself always talking about the same...)

Sunday run - Treino de Domingo

A friend suggested that if we have been running longer distances we could take a train to a nearby town and run back to Prague. Prague is crossed by the Vltava river, and there are quite a few towns along the river, so we just had to check the map and see how far we wanted to go. Because the train was more difficult to find than expected we ended up missing it, and instead of waiting 1h for the next train we decided to run to Dolany and come back by train.

Dolany (from the internet)

It was a fantastic training! Half of the way was made on pedestrian paths, therefore on road, but the second half was more adventurous with a mixed terrain. We ran on soil, gravel, sand, mud, and even through a small forest of trash (the floods last year dragged quite a lot of fabric that is still hanging on the trees). We had camel backs with water and some candy in our pockets, and that was enough to keep us going for 20km (about 12.5 miles). We only walked once, because we had to almost climb to reach a bridge to cross the river. I'm quite happy to have made it, even though slowly (quite exactly 2h), as my legs were still tired from last week. It was quite tough as well for J., because yesterday he played all afternoon in a football tournament. He made it and he proved to be quite a tough boy!

The paths for pedestrians and bicycles - Percurso pedreste e ciclovia (from internet)

There quite a lot of industries in the region, so part of the path was made of black gravel like in the picture. (from internet)

I wish I had pictures from the way, because it was really nice, always with the river next to us. Maybe we'll go back for a walk and take the camera. I copied some pictures from the internet just to give you an idea.

The map of our path - O mapa do nosso percurso

I have been wanting to do more trail running, and the run of today really showed me that I was made for that! I love getting dirty, and road running is just too clean for me ;)
