(Dis)Orientering

Orienteering is a big sport in Sweden, a country full of nature lovers. It basically consists of running between different checkpoints spread in an unknown piece of land, often a forest, using only a paper map and a compass. That's the serious version. For less athletic people there are other options, like the Hittaut app we found recently. The app shows a bunch of checkpoints spread all over the city's green areas (yes, because even if Gothenburg is the second largest city in the country it does have a lot of forests just at a stone's throw from the city - welcome to Sweden!) and using the GPS of the phone it is pretty easy to find the points. Once we get to the point, there's a code on a metal marker that we read and register in the app, which changes the status of that checkpoint to done. The goal is to do as many as possible and there are prizes every month.

Sounds pretty cool, no? So we decided to give it a try, doing it my way... with an ice cream break in the middle.
Bem fixe, ah?

We did 16 checkpoints running/walking a total of 13 km. The checkpoints are often in high points and we got beautiful views from up there. Sometimes I couldn't believe that was so close to the city! We also got to discover new paths and places.

J. always saw the markers first and there were times where the marker was right in front of me and I didn't see it! He also has a great sense of orientation knowing always his north, whereas I often guided us in the wrong direction... Such a great orienteer... But I did enjoy myself a lot!

One of the funniest parts was when we had to cross a stream. Someone had set up a slackline and rope and it looked easy enough since it was a very small stream.
Johan did it without a problem. Me too. Ok... not really. Halfway through I decided to question Johan's technique and find my own, which resulted in me almost falling into the water. Luckily I was close enough to the other side and J. could help me (after taking pictures of me of course!).

Before and after the moment I decided to rotate my feet... not a great decision...

So, I'm no Tove Alexandersson (the Swedish champion in Orienteering), but I did enjoy the closeness to nature, the fresh air, the challenges of going through muddy places, jumping stones, crossing "rivers" and the variation that all that brings to my training, so I think I will be doing it more often from now on.
Don't worry, if I come across some nice landscapes I'll share them here with you :)

Cabo Espichel and Sesimbra's castle - Portugal

Cabo Espichel is a cape on the western coast of Portugal, not far from Sesimbra, surrounded by a somewhat wild landscape of steep cliffs and the Atlantic ocean. Besides the natural views, there's also the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Stone Mua, composed of a church, an aqueduct among other constructions. And a lighthouse, of course. Although most of the buildings are abandoned, the whole thing has a mystic atmosphere and is well worth a visit.

The day was still not over and we decided to also visit Sesimbra's castle just before sunset. This is a gorgeous medieval castle, with its thick stony walls standing proudly on top of the mountain overlooking the estuaries of the Tagus and Sado rivers.

The views from the castle was great so we stayed until sunset and enjoyed the golden our there. It had been a long day with hikes, scratches, splashes in the sea, wind in the cape and some fun at the castle. A great day that ended, of course, with a nice dinner of grilled fish. It was so good that no photos were taken. You will have to go there and try yourself!

Sesimbra - Portugal

After a hot dry summer in Europe, we decided it was safer to visit Portugal just at the end of September. Truth is, all these years living with real winters, both in Prague and here, have made me much more sensitive to heat and temperatures in the high 30s or 40s are just unbearable.
September was, however, perfect. It was still warm and sunny, but not too much. Our visit wasn't long but there was time to visit some new places, like Sesimbra. I was told I had been there before many years ago, but I have no memory of that.

Coming from an active summer of cycling around and willing to enjoy the gorgeous sunshine before returning to cloudy Sweden, we proposed everyone to go for a hike in the forest that surrounds Sesimbra. My parents, who are quite adventurous and enjoy a good walk, agreed immediately and I checked online for trails. We choose a 7km trail that promised great views to the sea and beaches.

We soon understood that the trail was not great, but there was one and we followed it ending up down on the beach.

After a few pictures and awes at this beautiful landscape, we crossed the beach to where the trail should continue. It was not easy to see it because it was totally covered in very dry bushes and broken twigs. We continued always motivated by the view we would have from the top of the mount and after a while, we got to a few places with a great view and all the scratches (and there were many!) became worth it!

From left to right: my mum, my sister and me.

We got lost so many times in such a short time, because the trail simply disappeared, that we did a shorter version and exchanged the forest for the beach.
Left: the end of the trail with a "no fishing" sign. Right: a well-deserved sea swim after so much sweat.

We also exchanged the sports shoes for flip flops, to be able to walk with the feet dipped in the sea, which in its turn didn't make it easy to walk on the stony parts of the beach. But it was all so beautiful that no one really cared.

After the usual ice cream on the beach, we went back to the car and drove to the top of the mountains to get an overview of the region. It's beautiful with all the green and blue!

 Sesimbra

We vividly recommend you to visit Sesimbra for a day off the big city. It's not far from Lisbon and still, you will feel like in a whole new place. Look at us, so happy and relaxed!

Gothenburg's archipelago has thousands of islands, of all sizes, shapes and landscapes. It is divided in the northern and southern archipelago and both of them are very popular day trips destinations in the summer. Brännö is one of the closest islands to the city, which makes it fast and easy to get there. It has about 700 inhabitants, probably more in the summer than in the winter. It's a great place to hike, bathe, eat a picnic and enjoy a sunny day. Just like the one when we went there last September.

The small town is spread on a part of the island, between small marinas, ports, bathing piers and rocks. Brännö Brygga is the most famous spot in Brännö, because it features in a very popular Swedish song of Lasse Dahlquist, from 1941.

There's also a beautiful foot stone bridge, Türks bro, between Brännö and Galterö. Galterö is partly a nature reserve and partly a military area. One can also say that Galterö is a giant grassy field where sheep roam freely.

After exploring both Brännö and Galterö we enjoyed a beer in a bar built in a shipyard. Unfortunately, I didn't take a picture of all the half boats, tools and scrap laying around just outside the bar, because the bar was literally in the middle of the shipyard. It had a great view as well!
More islands in this archipelago will certainly be explored in a few months when the summer is back in Sweden.
