Monsanto park, Lisbon - Portugal

My sister lives near Lisbon and every time we are visiting there are some rituals. For instance, we take daily walks by the sea and we always eat grilled chicken from the place around the corner. At the same time, we also try to do something new. Last time we visited her, I noticed we had never been to the forest of Monsanto, a nearby place where people often go for a walk or a run. It is also called the lungs of the city of Lisbon because it's the largest green area in the region. 

A minha irmã mora perto de Lisboa e cada vez que a vamos visitar há alguns rituais. Por exemplo, fazemos caminhadas diárias à beira-mar e comemos sempre frango grelhado da churrascaria da esquina. Além dos nossos rituais também tentamos fazer sempre algo novo. Da última vez que a visitámos, percebemos que nunca tínhamos estado na floresta de Monsanto, um sítio perto onde as pessoas geralmente vão caminhar ou correr. Monsanto é às vezes chamado de pulmão da cidade de Lisboa, porque é a maior área verde da região.

Isn't it great to find and explore new places in cities where one has been so many times? Now I want to go back and actually run in Monsanto (that day was way too hot for that). Maybe I can make it a ritual for my visits to my sister!

Não é bom encontrar e explorar novos lugares nas cidades onde já estivemos tantas vezes? Agora  quero voltar e ir correr para Monsanto (naquele dia estava muito calor para isso). Talvez se possa tornar num novo ritual durante as minhas visitas à minha irmã!

Cabo Espichel and Sesimbra's castle - Portugal

Cabo Espichel is a cape on the western coast of Portugal, not far from Sesimbra, surrounded by a somewhat wild landscape of steep cliffs and the Atlantic ocean. Besides the natural views, there's also the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Stone Mua, composed of a church, an aqueduct among other constructions. And a lighthouse, of course. Although most of the buildings are abandoned, the whole thing has a mystic atmosphere and is well worth a visit. 

O Cabo Espichel fica na costa ocidental de Portugal, não muito longe de Sesimbra, e é rodeado por uma paisagem um tanto selvagem de falésias íngremes e do oceano Atlântico. Além de uma paisagem natural há também o Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Pedra Mua, composto por uma igreja, um aqueduto e outras construções. E um farol, claro. Embora a maioria dos edifícios estejam abandonados, há uma certa mística no ar e vale bem a pena uma visita.

The day was still not over and we decided to also visit Sesimbra's castle just before sunset. This is a gorgeous medieval castle, with its thick stony walls standing proudly on top of the mountain overlooking the estuaries of the Tagus and Sado rivers.  

O dia ainda não tinha acabado e decidimos visitar também o castelo de Sesimbra, quase com o sol a pôr-se. É um castelo da época medieval e é lindo, com as suas paredes de pedra espessa orgulhosamente assentes no topo da montanha, com vista para os estuários do Tejo e do Sado.

The views from the castle was great so we stayed until sunset and enjoyed the golden our there. It had been a long day with hikes, scratches, splashes in the sea, wind in the cape and some fun at the castle. A great day that ended, of course, with a nice dinner of grilled fish. It was so good that no photos were taken. You will have to go there and try yourself!

A vista do castelo é fantástica e decidimos ficar até ao pôr-do-sol para aproveitarmos bem a hora dourada. Tinha sido um dia longo com caminhadas, arranhões, mergulhos no mar, vento no cabo e diversão no castelo. Um grande dia que terminou, claro, com um belo jantar de peixe grelhado. Foi tão bom que não tiramos nenhuma foto. Vão ter que ir vocês mesmos e experimentar!

Sesimbra - Portugal

After a hot dry summer in Europe, we decided it was safer to visit Portugal just at the end of September. Truth is, all these years living with real winters, both in Prague and here, have made me much more sensitive to heat and temperatures in the high 30s or 40s are just unbearable. 

September was, however, perfect. It was still warm and sunny, but not too much. Our visit wasn't long but there was time to visit some new places, like Sesimbra. I was told I had been there before many years ago, but I have no memory of that. 

Depois de um verão quente e seco na Europa, decidimos que o mais seguro era visitar Portugal apenas em setembro. A verdade é que todos estes anos a viver com invernos a sério, tanto em Praga como aqui, me tornaram muito mais sensível ao calor e temperaturas acima de 35ºC são insuportáveis.

Setembro foi, no entanto, perfeito. Ainda havia calor e estava sol, mas não demasiado. A nossa visita foi curta, mas houve tempo para visitar alguns lugares novos, como Sesimbra. Disseram-me que eu já lá tinha estado há muitos anos, mas não me lembro de nada.

Coming from an active summer of cycling around and willing to enjoy the gorgeous sunshine before returning to cloudy Sweden, we proposed everyone to go for a hike in the forest that surrounds Sesimbra. My parents, who are quite adventurous and enjoy a good walk, agreed immediately and I checked online for trails. We choose a 7km trail that promised great views to the sea and beaches. 

Vindo de um verão activo a andar de bicicleta e determinados a aproveitar ao máximo do sol antes de regressar à turva Suécia, propusemos a todos fazer uma caminhada pela floresta que rodeia Sesimbra. Os meus pais, que são bastante aventureiros e não se negam a uma boa caminhada, disseram logo que sim e eu fui ver de trilhos onlines. Escolhemos um trilho de 7 km que prometia excelentes vistas para o mar e as praias.

We soon understood that the trail was not great, but there was one and we followed it ending up down on the beach.  

Desde cedo nos apercebemos que o trilho não era grande coisa, mas havia um e nós seguimo-lo até descermos à praia.

After a few pictures and awes at this beautiful landscape, we crossed the beach to where the trail should continue. It was not easy to see it because it was totally covered in very dry bushes and broken twigs. We continued always motivated by the view we would have from the top of the mount and after a while, we got to a few places with a great view and all the scratches (and there were many!) became worth it!

Depois de algumas fotos e ahs! sobre esta bela paisagem, atravessamos a praia e procuramos a continuação do trilho. Não foi fácil vê-lo porque estava totalmente coberta de arbustos muito secos e galhos partidos. Continuamos na mesma sempre motivados pela vista que íamos ter do topo do monte. Depois de um tempo, chegamos finalmente a umas aberturas que nos permitiram apreciar a paisagem e todos os arranhões (e tínhamos muitos!) passaram a valer a pena!

We got lost so many times in such a short time, because the trail simply disappeared, that we did a shorter version and exchanged the forest for the beach.

Perdemo-nos tantas vezes em tão pouco tempo, porque o trilho simplesmente desaparecia, que decidimos fazer uma versão mais curta da caminhada e trocamos a floresta pela praia.

À esquerda: o final do trilho com uma placa de "não pescar". À direita: um banho de mar bem merecido depois de tanto suor.

We also exchanged the sports shoes for flip flops, to be able to walk with the feet dipped in the sea, which in its turn didn't make it easy to walk on the stony parts of the beach. But it was all so beautiful that no one really cared. 

Também trocamos os ténis pelos chinelos, para poder andar com os pés no mar, o que por sua vez, dificultou a caminhada nas partes pedregosas da praia. Mas era tudo tão bonito que ninguem se importou. 

After the usual ice cream on the beach, we went back to the car and drove to the top of the mountains to get an overview of the region. It's beautiful with all the green and blue!
Depois do gelado do costume na praia voltamos para o carro e fomos até ao topo das montanhas para apreciarmos a vista sobre toda a região. Esta mistura de tanto verde com tanto azul é linda!

 Sesimbra

We vividly recommend you to visit Sesimbra for a day off the big city. It's not far from Lisbon and still, you will feel like in a whole new place. Look at us, so happy and relaxed!

Nós recomendamos muitíssimo uma visita a Sesimbra para descansarem da cidade grande. Não é longe de Lisboa e ainda assim, vão-se sentir num lugar completamente diferente. Olhem só para nós, tão felizes e relaxados!

Serralves

Serralves is a cultural institution near Porto, whose mission is to "raise the general public's awareness concerning contemporary art and the environment, via the Museum of Contemporary Art, Park and Auditorium". It also incorporates a Villa, from 1940, and each building is an example of contemporary architecture, Modernism, and Art Deco architecture. A proper visit to the whole park takes a few hours and it makes a enjoyable morning or afternoon. 

Serralves é uma instituição cultural perto do Porto, cuja missão é "sensibilizar o público em geral para a arte contemporânea e o meio ambiente, através do Museu de Arte Contemporânea, Parque e Auditório". Além disso incorpora ainda uma Villa, a conhecida Casa de Serralves de 1940. Cada edifício é um exemplo da arquitetura contemporânea, modernismo e arquitetura Art Déco. Uma visita decente a todo o parque leva algumas horas e faz uma agradável manhã ou tarde.

I have been to Porto many times but a visit to Serralves was still due. This time our flight back to sweden was canceled and rebooked for the day after, which gave us a whole extra day in the city and we could finally visit the whole park. In the end we were glad it was canceled! If one has to have a flight canceled let it be in an interesting city full of things to see and do. 

Já estive no Porto muitas vezes, mas uma visita a Serralves ainda estava em falta. Desta vez o nosso vôo de volta para a Suécia foi cancelado e remarcado para o dia seguinte, o que nos deu um dia extra na cidade e finalmente pudemos visitar o parque. No final ficamos contentes por o voo ter sido cancelado! Se tivermos que ter um voo cancelado, ao menos que seja numa cidade interessante e cheia de coisas para fazer.
