At the end of last year, I wrote in a post that we had exciting plans for 2019, including some new places to visit. It started great with our first trip of the year being cancelled... 

Around September last year, we got the chance to purchase a special package for 2 weeks in Turkey. We don't usually book packages but the price was really good and the places to visit looked fantastic: one week travelling around in the Cappadocia region and one week in a kind of resort by the sea. All this in the middle of the winter. Swedish winter. Several dates were offered and we booked ours for March so that we would celebrate our first wedding anniversary during the trip.  It was more of a coincidence since most other dates were already taken when we booked. 

In January this year, the trip was cancelled. We could get our money back or book something else. None of the other trips was as appealing and we didn't really want to keep dealing with this travel agency, as they never clarified why the trip was cancelled, despite us asking several times. Therefore, we got our money back and were left with all the disappointment of a cancelled trip.

We were really looking forward to it and the thought of 3 winter months uninterrupted was killing us. At first, we said we would buy a last minute trip for the same dates, but we ended up settling down for a day in a spa nearby.

Em setembro do ano passado, tivemos a oportunidade de comprar um pacote especial de duas semanas na Turquia. Normalmente não compramos pacotes pre-feitos, mas o preço era realmente bom e os locais por onde passava pareciam fantásticos: uma semana na região da Capadócia e uma semana num tipo de resort à beira-mar. Tudo isto no meio do inverno. Inverno sueco. Havia várias datas e nós reservamos o nosso para março, para que pudéssemos celebrar o nosso primeiro aniversário de casamento durante a viagem. Foi mais uma coincidência uma vez que a maioria das outras datas já estavam cheias.

Em janeiro deste ano a viagem foi cancelada. Disseram-nos que podiam devolver o dinheiro ou podiamos reservar outro pacote. Nenhuma das outras viagens nos pareceu tão interessante e preferíamos não ter que continuar a lidar com esta agência de viagens, porque nunca nos explicaram o motivo do cancelamento da viagem, apesar de termos perguntado várias vezes. Assim, recebemos o dinheiro de volta e ficamos apenas com toda a decepção de uma viagem cancelada.

Estávamos super contentes por irmos à Turquia e o pensamento de 3 meses de inverno ininterruptos estava a dar cabo de nós. Pensamos comprar uma viagem de última hora para as mesmas datas, mas acabamos por desistir da ideia e passar um dia num spa nas proximidades.

And that's how our 2 weeks in Turkey became a day and a half in the Spa in Gothenburg. It wasn't exactly the same thing, but it was a break. I don't have any pictures, as it was a mobile free spa, but it was one of the best I have been to (which were not many). There were so many different stations, to lay down, to bathe, different saunas, that it was never boring.  

The highlights for me were:  

     - a dark room with water mattresses where one could lay down and listen to the sound of the sea. 

     - a cold sauna with cubes of ice sliding down a tube every few seconds - it had a green light so it felt like the inside of a caipirinha. 

     - a sauna with a view to the sea

     - the combination of a cinnamon sauna + cold water (8ºC) dipping tank (where it fit only 1 at the time) 

The best was really me being able to be in a sauna! I usually panic because it feels so claustrophobic, but this time I could stand it and actually relax. Maybe because of the nice view. Or because I was sooo tired and needed it.  I really enjoyed the hot + cold combination and felt all the stress leaving my body. 

E foi assim que nossas duas semanas na Turquia se tornaram um dia e meio no Spa em Gotemburgo. Não foi exatamente a mesma coisa, mas foi uma pausa. Não tenho fotos porque eram proibidos no spa, mas foi um dos melhores onde já estive (que não são muitos). Havia imensas estações diferentes, para se estar deitado, para tomar banho, saunas diferentes, nunca se fica farto.

Os destaques para mim foram:

     - um quarto escuro com colchões de água onde se podia deitar e ouvir o som do mar.

    - uma sauna fria com cubos de gelo a sair por um tubo a cada poucos segundos - tinha uma luz verde e parecia o interior de uma caipirinha.

     - sauna com vista para o mar

     - a combinação de uma sauna com cheiro a canela + tanque de água fria (8ºC) (onde cabia apenas 1 pessoa de cada vez)

O melhor foi mesmo o eu ser capaz de estar numa sauna! Geralmente entro em pânico porque é tão claustrofóbico, mas dessa vez aguentei-me lá dentro e até consegui relaxar. Talvez por causa da vista bonita. Ou porque estava tão cansada e precisava disto. Também gostei imenso da combinação quente + frio no tanque e senti todo o stress a ser libertado aos poucos.

The meals were included and after the spa we could enjoy a nice dinner and a glass of champagne to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. I joked with J. saying that we should celebrate 1(1) year(s) as we have been together for almost 11 years, which feels more meaningful than to celebrate just the time as a married couple. At the same time, it's perfect to have an excuse for a break in March, when we are tired of the long dark winter months. 

As refeições estavam incluídas e depois do spa, tivemos direito a um jantar delicioso e uma taça de champanhe para celebrar o nosso primeiro aniversário de casamento. Meio a brincar disse ao J. que deveríamos comemorar 1(1) ano(s) porque estamos juntos há quase 11 anos, o que parece mais significativo do que celebrar apenas o tempo de casados. Por outro lado é perfeito ter uma desculpa para fazer uma pausa em Março, quando estamos cansados dos longos e escuros meses de inverno.

We will definitely do this again! A break in your own city is a great idea!
Vamos voltar a fazer isto outra vez! Um para fora cá dentro na mesma cidade é uma ideia brilhante!

I don't care much about Valentine's day and it's not something we celebrate - the overdose of hearts in Poland at this time of the year certainly didn't make it better when I lived there - but I can share a nice experience me and Johan had last summer. 

We have a friend that works as a pastry chef in a fancy hotel, here in Gothenburg. She loves baking, makes great bread and shares the most insane pictures on her Instagram. In the summer, the restaurant at the hotel opens a terrace, where one can go and enjoy a drink and... the desserts. That's exactly what we did. 

Não ligo ao dia dos namorados e não é algo que comemoremos em casa - a overdose de corações na Polônia nesta época do ano certamente não melhorou a situação quando lá morei - mas posso partilhar uma boa experiência que eu e o Johan tivemos no verão passado.

Temos uma amiga que trabalha como chefe pasteleira num hotel chique aqui em Gotemburgo. Ela adora fazer bolos, faz um pão fantástico e partilha as fotos mais insanas no Instagram. No verão passado o restaurante do hotel abriu um terraço ao público, onde se pode ir beber um copo e ... provar as sobremesas. Foi exatamente isso o que fizemos.

Escape in Douro

After a couple of very intensive days all we wanted was to rest and take it all in. We spent two nights in a spa lost in the middle of nowhere in the Douro region. The surroundings were beautiful, the food was great and locally produced and we had the best full body massage ever (although the spa itself was quite disappointing). 

Depois de alguns dias muito intensos, tudo o que queríamos era descansar e processar tudo. Passámos duas noites num spa perdido no meio do nada na região do Douro. Os arredores eram bonitos, a comida era óptima e os ingredientes produzidos localmente. Ainda tivemos a melhor massagem de corpo inteiro de sempre (embora o spa em si fosse uma desilusão).

We left the spa hotel and caught a train to Porto in this gorgeous train station, right by the river. A nice way to finish our lovely and quiet stay in the Douro. 

Saímos do hotel e apanhámos um comboio para o Porto nesta magnífica estação ferroviária, mesmo junto ao rio, o que foi uma boa maneira de terminar a nossa estadia tão boa e tranquila no Douro.

Swedish summer berries - Newbie

Berries are abundant in Sweden, especially in the summer, and there's a berry for everyone's taste. Some are quite unique, others are more common and for me they are all delicious (if used correctly). My favourite are raspberries to eat with yoghurt and granola and red current crumble to eat with vanilla ice cream. Although, I never say no to a good berry-jam on toasted bread. Or pancakes. Or waffles. You get what I mean...

Some of the berries grow wildly in the forests and for a Newbie it can be confusing or difficult to identify them, so I wrote an article on The Newbie Guide to Sweden about it. It's kind of like a crash course in Swedish berries.

Athens, the food

I had been in Greece before and the one thing I never forgot was the food. I remembered eating a lot of fresh salads, grilled fish and meat, cheese and finishing it off with some greek frozen yoghurt. I was there with my sister in 2012 and we had our favourite place in Athens to eat greek frozen yoghurt. It was the creamiest, tastiest frozen yoghurt we have ever had and when I told her I was going back she told me I had to try to find this place. 

It was not an easy mission because we only remembered how it looked like just outside, but had no idea how to get there. It took me a few days, and I had to go back to the hotel where I stayed with my sister to find out the right street, but I found it. Unfortunately, when I finally found the shop I saw that it had become a fast food restaurant with some very dodgy pizzas. It was the disappointment of the trip as I had talked really highly of this place to Johan. 

To make up for it we decided to try all the frozen yoghurts we came across and we found some good ones. We also found a Greek yoghurt bar, where one could add different toppings to it. The most traditional and super delicious toppings are walnuts and honey. It is to die for!! Especially because the yoghurt itself is just so incredibly good. Interestingly, I don't have any pictures of frozen yoghurt. I guess I was always too busy enjoying it, but I do have some from our meals. 

Já tinha estado na Grécia antes e se houve coisa que nunca esqueci foi a comida. Lembrava-me de ter comido muitas saladas frescas, peixe e carne grelhados, queijos e de comer iogurte grego gelado. Estive lá com minha irmã em 2012 e encontramos o nosso lugar favorito em Atenas para comer iogurte gelado grego. Foi o iogurte gelado mais cremoso e saboroso que alguma vez provamos e quando lhe disse que ia voltar, ela disse-me que eu tinha que tentar encontrar o mesmo sítio.

Não foi uma missão fácil, porque nós só nos lembrávamos de como se parecia por fora, mas não fazia ideia de como chegar lá. Demorou alguns dias e tive que voltar ao hotel onde tinha ficado com a minha irmã para descobrir a rua certa, mas encontrei-a. Infelizmente quando finalmente encontrei a loja vi que se tinha tornado num restaurante de fast food com pizzas muito duvidosas. Foi a desilusão total uma vez que tinha falado mesmo muito dele também com o Johan.

Para compensar decidimos experimentar todos os iogurtes gelados que encontramos e encontramos muitos bons. Também encontramos um bar de iogurte grego, onde se podiam adicionar toppings diferentes. Os ingredientes mais tradicionais e super deliciosos são as nozes e o mel e é de chorar por mais!! Especialmente porque o iogurte já por si é tão incrivelmente bom. Curiosamente, não tenho nenhuma foto dos iogurtes ou gelados. Estive sempre demasiado ocupada a come-los, mas tenho algumas fotos das nossas refeições.

Växjö - Sweden

We visited Växjö, a lovely Swedish city, during in the autumn last year. It was not the first time we were there and I have already written about it here. The word Växjö means way in the lake and the city is surrounded by different lakes. The temperature was low but the weather was lovely with a really bright sky. This time we took the chance to walk more around the lakes and surrounding nature, and not so much in the city. We also visited Ingelstad again, where Johan's mother grew up.

Visitamos Växjö, uma pequena cidade sueca, durante o outono do ano passado. Não foi a primeira vez que estivemos lá e até já escrevi sobre isso aqui. A palavra Växjö significa caminho no lago e a cidade está rodeada por vários lagos. Estava frio mas o tempo estava bom, com um céu azul brilhante. Desta vez aproveitamos a oportunidade para passear mais ao redor dos lagos e na natureza em volta, e não tanto na cidade. Também visitamos novamente Ingelstad, onde a mãe de Johan cresceu.

Inglinge mound

Inglinge mound, in Ingelstad town located about 20 Km south of Växjö, is one of Småland's largest ancient remains, that goes back to the iron age, around 1100-500 AD. A circle of high stones surround the largest mound where there is a standing stone on top. Other small circles and can also be seen in the area. 

O monte de Inglinge, na cidade de Ingelstad a cerca de 20 km ao sul de Växjö, é um dos maiores restos antigos da região de Småland, que remonta à era do ferro, em torno de 1100-500 a. C. Um círculo de pedras altas cercam o monte maior onde há uma pedra em pé no topo. Outros pequenos círculos também podem ser vistos na área.

Teleborg Castle

Teleborg castle is a fantastic building that resembles a fairytale castle. Despite its medieval style it was only built in 1900 as a wedding present from Count Fredrik Bonde to his wife Anna Koskull. Nowadays it's used as a hotel and conference venue. Inside there's also a restaurant and it was exactly there we were heading. We had a three-course lunch to celebrate a birthday in the family and we even got the manager to tell us the story of the castle and show us around. 

O castelo de Teleborg é um edifício fantástico quase como um castelo de conto de fadas. Apesar do seu estilo medieval, foi construído apenas em 1900 como presente de casamento do conde Fredrik Bonde para a sua esposa Anna Koskull. Hoje em dia é usado como hotel e local para conferências. Lá dentro há também um restaurante e foi mesmo aí que fomos. Estávamos a celebrar um aniversário na família e experimentámos o menu de almoço com três pratos. Além disso a gerente esteve presente durante o almoço para nos contar a história do castelo e nos mostrar mais tarde o seu interior.

It must have been quite special to receive such beautiful castle as a gift. Recently, the Teleborg castle was also featured in the Swedish TV show Sjärnorna på slottet (it means roughly "stars in the castle"), in which stars from different areas lived there for a week and talked about each other's careers. Who wouldn't want to live in such place, with great views over the lake, the city and surrounded by this beautiful nature!

Deve ter sido bastante especial receber um castelo tão bonito como presente. O castelo de Teleborg foi usado recentemente no programa de TV sueco Sjärnorna på slottet (que significa "estrelas no castelo"), em que estrelas de diferentes áreas moraram por uma semana no castelo e conversaram sobre as suas carreiras. Quem não gostaria de morar ali, com aquela vista sobre o lago, a cidade e cercado por esta natureza tão bonita!
